Hello all, I am new here. I hear this is a great list for discovering all kinds of great music and much more. Anyway - to cut right to the chase: I'm digging deeper into the underground of Japanese music and was wondering where I could purchase some of the CDs I am dying to get my hands on. Some artists such as Wono Satoru (everything I heard from him so far is beyond SUPER, right up there with Otomo), Harpy, Haco's After Dinner, Hoppy Kamiyama, etc. I am moving to Tokyo later this year but I need this shit like yesterday. Any web site suggestions? Forced Exposure comes up short. Even the well known Twisted Village in Cambridge, MA had very little. DTMGallery, forget it. Do I just have to wait till I arrive in the country? To add some news to the list I hear the doc on Zorn, "Bookshelf..." is not due on DVD through tzadik.com till 2004! Why the suspense! I'm partial to Johnny Paycheck (ne Donald Lytle), who passed on to the great honky-tonk in the sky this past February. Paycheck wore "his hurt real proud" -- his songs offer a certain vulnerability and pathos very rare in any vocal music. His classic early work featured Lloyd Green on blazing pedal steel. Eugene Chadbourne of course, is a big Paycheck fan, and writes about him on the Squid's Ear site (http://www.squidsear.com/cgi-bin/news/newsView.cgi) He calls Paycheck "avant-garde," and describes Paycheck's 1979 band thus: "This group was called The West Texas Music Company and was kind of the Mahavishnu Orchestra of country music. They would play tunes ridiculously fast and trade off outrageous solos. Unlike fusion jazz, these improvisations were short, the traditional four bar country and western solo exchanges, going by so briefly and with such precision that I presented them to maestro John Zorn as an example of ultra-fast 'cartoon' music." Alejandro Escovedo Benefit Show (NO ZORN)

Hello friends, I just received this very sad news about Alejandro Escovedo and I figured some of you may share my concern. People in the Chicago area can attend the benefit events, but maybe other fans will be willing to make some sort of donation to help him receive the medical treatment he needs. I apologize in advance if anyone is offended by my email. More info is available at www.alejandrofund.com Tom Alejandro Escovedo is at his home in Texas recouperating from complications from Hepatitis C. He's had to cancel his usually active touring schedule and his recording plans until next year. Like many artists, Alejandro has no health insurance -- and now mounting medical bills and no tour income. In his time of need, we all want to help the Godfather of Punk and Roots, The King of Americana, The Conductor of Orchestral Glam. He's provided a lush soundtrack to our lives. Now he's illin' so it's our turn to repay him. Bloodshot Records and friends are planning "Por Vida," a two-day festival to benefit and honor Alejandro Escovedo. Sixteen bands/artists will appear over the two days at The Abbey Pub on Thursday July 31st and at FitzGerald's on Friday August 1st. Each band will perform an Alejandro Escovedo song during their thirty minute set. Both shows start at 8pm and doors open at 7pm. All monies raised from the festival will go directly to the Alejandro Escovedo fund. There will be a raffle held at the Abbey Pub show, and a silent art auction at FitzGerald's (details to follow next week). Dear all: I've written an extremely long review of the Zorn-organized tribute to Irving Stone, a longtime supporter of the Downtown and Vision Fest scenes, that took place all day this past Saturday at Tonic.
