i'll chime in my two cents all at once to get it all out of the way. first of all, lombardo appeared in matthew barney's cremaster 2 (my personal favorite). i recommend the soundtrack to this film highly, great classical/avant/jazz/etc. from barney's musical composer Jonathan Bepler. i recommend Barney's beautiful new book "the cremaster cycle" available for around $40 on amazon. Barney is really into punk and hardcore, parts of the cremaster series had allusions to metal and hardcore (agnostic front and murphy's law were in cremaster 3). too bad he couldn't get SSD like he had wanted... in terms of slowness: SWANS ("filth" era) Melvins-s/t (originally released as "Lysol") Khanate (James Plotkin and Steven O'Malley) Old Man Gloom-seminar III: Zozobra (a thirty minute opus, one track, slow, epic. makes my hair stand) exquisite drumming (speed): Dave Witte (i.e. Discordance Axis, Human Remains) Brian Chippendale (of Lightning Bolt) Charles Hayward (This Heat, Camberwell Now) Lombardo for a good new rock record check out: Harkonen-"Shake Harder Boy" (on hydra head records, melvins meets botch) and i believe it is Manowar who holds the record for loudest band (correct me if i'm wrong). for good news on eye candy and slow music c/o Steven O'malley, see his website at: www.ideologic.org "slow is the new loud" -adam morosky _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? I had the same experience watching Anthrax's Charlie Benante back in the mid 80s. His feet never stopped pumping at mach speed for the entire show ## FUNNY YOU SHOULD SAY THAT. RECENTLY I READ AN INTERVIEW WITH BILLY MILANO (SOD/MOD) (OR WAS IT LILKER..???, CAN'T REMEMBER, BUT SOMEONE) & THEY WERE PAYING OUT BENANTE CALLING HIM "CHARLIE 'CAN YOU FIX MY OUT-OF-TIME DOUBLE KICK IN PRO-TOOLS?' BENANTE". ON THE SANDOVAL THING, I SAW HIM DO IT FOR ABOUT 60min OZ TOUR FOR 'DOMINATION'. BOT ONLY IS HE SPEED, HE PLAYS GREAT SLOW STUFF & ALSO I'VE HEARD HIM SWING!! ON THE 'NOO-YAWK' SUBJECT, DOES ANYONE KNOW IF ZORN HAS HUNG AROUND WITH THE ANTHRAX BOYS? IN THEIR EARLY DAYS, I.E, BEING FROM DOWNTOWN EAST, SCOTT IAN ALSO GOING BY THE NICK-NAME 'THE JEW' ETC.... I'd say Mimi parker from Low is probably the most consistently slow drummer. Most of her stuff is around 40 bpm, and that's over several records. I wouldn't count a drummer that "played really slow once" as part of a song, but someone who always consisently plays slow. She's the one. andrew

it seems as if I listen to more "rock" than the average zornlister, but I'm still light years for my peers. When I hear Jack Johnson, I think Miles Davis. Most people my age think something entirely different. It seems that many college age kids are in a holding pattern for music. There was much excitement on campus when Everclear and Counting Crows came around. I felt like I was in time warp or something. I saw Vandermark the day Counting Crows played on campus... Zach

I seem to stumble on more interesting new things in electronica than in rock these days. Most of the rock stuff I've enjoyed in the past year or so is by folks who've been around a good while -- Richard Thompson, Tanya Donnelly, Frank Black & the Catholics, Bloodthirsty Lovers (featuring Dave Shouse from the Grifters, who has a sly electronica influence and a drummer who can mimic drum 'n' bass one second and do Elvin Jones the next), Aimee Mann, Chuck Prophet, Robbie Fulks and the Iguanas. And there's a New Orleans band called the Geraniums, all guys in their late 30s-early 40s who have played in scads of other bands, that sort of blends Van Morrisson, the Velvet Underground and the Pogues without sounding overly like any of those. My favorite rock album of the whole year was P.J. O'Connell's, which is pretty much an NRBQ album w/ P.J. as the lead singer. I haven't bothered to buy albums by any of the much-touted young groups that are supposed to be reviving rock or garage rock or what have you. It's fun to see them pop up on late-night talk shows, as a change from the Jewel wannabes and the hip-pop posses, but none of the material is especially compelling. I listen to the college station here a lot and they're bad at back-announcing so I call and get artists' names when I really like something, but I can't remember ever calling to get the name of any rock groups they've played.
