zorn cd reviews - request for submissions

hello - the squid's ear online magazine <http://www.squidsear.com> is planning several special features to mark john zorn's 50th birthday in september. one thing we want to have in the issue is many, many reviews of zorn's recordings. since these aren't reviews of new cds, we're looking for pieces that will spur a bit of thought in people who already know the record. the kind of review we're looking for will be personal or social or anecdotal; it will be more than just a recommendation, but will have something to say (such as what record is his most overlooked, overrated or influential). any submissions will be considered, however we're not going to run more than one review of a single record. all reviews should be sent by July 15, but communication beforehand is welcome. if you have an idea, a question or want to try to request that you get to cover a particular title (such a request should include a compelling idea for the review), feel free to write. for what it's worth, we're more interested in provacative insights than flowery syntax. and we'll work with people for whom english isn't a first language to help make a compelling bit of prose. all questions, suggestions and reviews should be sent to <ear(a)squidco.com>. please participate. this will be a great overview of zorn's recording career, and we want to have many different voices involved. cheers, kurt _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Naked City webcast

sorry, joining this discussion late, but since there's been so much speculation on the "why/why not" of Naked City playing together....someone who seems like he would know told me yesterday that Frisell hasn't wanted to reform Naked City b/c of a hearing problem he's developed (which may also explain the increasingly "quiet" nature of his music recently). Which made me feel guilty about having criticized Frisell's playing during the first half of the show... Anyway, point being: apparently the money was good enough to risk physical harm. mem

I think it's easily their best work since "THRAK", especially the instrumental tracks ("Level 5", "Elektrik"). I'm still not too keen on Adrian Belew's singing, which I thought was much more enjoyable on "THRAK". On "Power", he sometimes appears to be fighting against the music. I also think the vocal songs are rather awkwardly written in a way, making them nit as interesting as the highly developed instrumental work. I'm going to see them at "the worst festival in the whole of Europe" on July 12th, and I certainly have high hopes for that gig. Frankco

What a complete surprise and delight, then, to come away from the current tour feeling like the band had rediscovered its spark. Much of the new material was really strong live; the band had truly gelled and the improvisatory quotient was up again (though certainly not to the level of '72-'74). Maybe you just caught an "off" night -- Fripp has certainly kvetched about playing Europe (and particularly Poland) in the past. I recently heard tell that the band will soon be issuing a DVD of live footage from the Japanese leg of this tour, as well as footage from last year's tour. The DVD will feature some kind of technological trick whereby you'll hear different improvisations every time you play the disc. From the DGM website: "Those fiendishly clever people at Apple are writing a program so that each time you watch your BootlegTV DVD it will randomly draw from the bank of improvisations,so that you know not what wonderous sounds may erupt from Frippean bowels or Belewbeloidal nether regions . Over four hours of music stored away, waiting to present itself on the unsuspecting listener." I might not get as rabidly worked up over every KC utterance these days, but at least the new album and latest tour restored my own "power to believe." My ex-girlfriend was really into alt-country and old rockabilly. She got me into this incredible female vocalist/guitarist named Wanda Jackson. She has a gritty voice and tough lyrics. She was definitely ahead of her time. I'm not sure what albums to suggest because I don't own any (yet). But Wanda Jackson is definitely worth checking out. The guitar playing is amazing at times, some of the stuff would surely impress Ribot or Frisell; very very creative for its time.
