Tomahawk, Jesus Lizard and Frank Zappa

Firstly, the new Tomahawk record is a far sight better than the first, which smacked of "rock supergroup" to me. Not to say that there weren't any good songs, because there were, but the new album sounds more cohesive and "bandlike". My feeling on this was confirmed by my seeing them live a few weeks ago. So what if a band writes normal rock songs? I can guarantee you, the people on this list are not as attuned to the charts as they think they are. Have any of you people listened to what's passing for "rock" these days? My God, Tomahawk comes off like King Crimson when they were good in this environment. Not everything ever written has to "push boundaries" or "break rules". Does the motherfucker rock? That's the question that should be asked, and Tomahawk's new Cd fits the definition to me. And while were on the subject, let's give Duane Denison his due. He is a superb guitar player, with an instantly recognizable style. I don't think he's ever gotten enough credit as a player. Hell, yes, I loved the Jesus Lizard, and Scratch Acid before that! Regarding the comments made by what's his name about Zappa. Yes, the guy had some utterly stupid song titles, but his music and antics made life a lot more fun while he was around. He was the first musician I idolized. I don't listen to his stuff much anymore, but his influence and attitude are sorely missed around these parts these days. What's all this crap about Patton being a commercial sellout on "Mit Gas." It's a "rock" album for cryin' out loud. Hate to say it, but Faith No More really wasn't that avant garde either (bless their souls, I miss them). Proof again that too many people on this list don't enjoy a good rock album. OT: Samla Mammas Manna

Hi everybody. I apologize for making my first post an off-topic one, but hey, here goes nothing. I'm 99.9% sure I'll be missing the upcoming Ruins tour due to Baltimore & D.C. cancellations but I noticed that Tatsuya Yoshida's now in the Swedish prog band Samla Mammas Manna. They'll be playing in Chapel Hill, NC on Labor Day weekend as part of the ProgDay festival. Has anyone here seen SMM (preferably in their current form) or is otherwise familiar with them? I'm tempted to go but I don't know if it'll be worth the $50 ticket and five hour drive. For what it's worth, I have no problem seeing bands I'm not familiar with as long as they're relatively entertaining, thought-provoking, whatever. Also, the album reviews I've read, along with the general band concept, have been intriguing. Thanks.

Boredoms

The last proper Boredoms release was "Vision Creation Newsun," with Eye, three drummers/percussionists, Hira on bass and Seichii Yamamoto on guitar; it was more Neu-via-MDMA whoosh than the spazz action of the earlier work, but listening through their whole discography reveals a gradual trend in this direction. They've since toured as the Vooredoms (maybe a few more 'Os' in there), which is Eye and 4 or 5 drummers doing sort of a psychedelic Koto thing - the only recorded evidence is on the All Tomorrow's Parties 1.1 compilation. Since the Boredoms have good name recognition, concert billing is still under that name. Anyway, I saw them three times when they played San Francisco and LA last year & with the exception of one rather tedious piece they were great. I think they were better with the more rockist lineup, but I'd happily go see whatever they're calling themselves this week. I guess WEA Japan won't let them put out tons of stuff they've recorded, nor will WEA license the material to overseas labels. I'll never understand why labels prefer 100% of nothing to a share of what they think is chump change. Chris Selvig

As far as free Jazz goes: IMO the whole concept of NAMING a free jazz peice does not make much sense. Especially if the piece is totally improvised. As such the artist can do one of two things. He/She can give the piece a name like 'movement 1' or he/she can make up a name based on anything he/she pleases. If you find the name silly thats of no consequence. Whats in a name anyways? At what point does it matter? It probably matters to some academic who feels uncomfortable giving a band named "Baby-rape Arkestra" (to use one of your egs.) a favorable review. As far as Mr. Zappa is concerned: Yes great composer....blah blah blah. I think he used "silly names" as a means of humour and i think he took a particular delight in doing things differently. IMO Zappa was making social commentary. Zappa's music (for me at least) brings the question of what is serious music into question. Is his music not serious because he uses "silly names"? or because he performed predominantly in rock settings rather than classical theatres? Are the dots on paper themselves serious? But not the lyrics or fashion in which they're performed? Who gets to decide what is serious anyways?
