He plays this large vertical many-stringed harp called the beguena (sic), which makes a viscous buzzing thrum, and half-sings-half-whispers, murmurs these songs softly into a mic that must be millimeters from his mouth: the effect is mesmerizing. To me (of course) most/all of the songs sound almost identical, with the same intervals/notes even, but that isn't really the point. Some of the most wonderful stuff to fall asleep or wake up to. Apparently Peter Kowald bent over backwards to find this before it was reissued (??) by the Ethiopiques series; this makes _total sense_. Patrice (still under the shock). PS: this might already been known but I cannot resist to say that FMR will reissue (soon) Trevor Watt's Amalgam fantastic WIPE OUT!!! Yes, the one with Keith Rowe playing rock guitar :-). Yes, this is great news. According to the Trevors, both Taylor of FMR and Watts, the box will be out this month. This is one I've been waiting for lo these many years. Don't miss Amalgam's "Innovations" which was released a few months ago on FMR and features some of the funkiest Keith Tippett you'll ever hear. As for Mr. Rowe, his duo with John Tilbury, "Duos for Doris." is on my best of list for this year (along with Dave Holland's "Extended Play"), and may qualify for Desert Island! It's that time of year again--the leaves are changing here in the Northeast, and I have a show coming up at Boogaloo (168 Marcy Ave.) in Brooklyn NY on Sunday, October 19, which may interest Z-listers into ambient guitar and electronics. I'm playing the opening night of Burg(h), a month-long show of Pittsburgh visual artists. What's going on out there in the hinterlands? Here's your chance to find out. I'll be performing a set of guitar processed through the laptop (using Peter Nyboer's Girl <http://girl.yowstar.com/>, a looping pedal, and a submixer for multiple feedback loops), resulting in sounds ranging from ambient drones to dystopian sample noise, and possibly even some beats for the hip kids. My slot's 10:00 to 10:45, which theoretically isn't too late for people who have to work Monday morning. NZC: gumnaam & ethiopiques & kim suek-chul

Hello everyone First, a while back there was some talk about the 'ethiopiques' series on Buda Musique out of france. I unfortunately ignored it at the time, but now, having discovered the series - wow! Excellent music (from ethiopia, mostly from a period of artistic flourishing from the late 1960s - early 1970s). I recently picked up volume 13, 'ethiopian groove', and am enjoying it quite a bit. So, a belated thanks to the list, and a recommendation to those who haven't experienced it yet (My current favorites are volumes 4, 9, and 13; I also have volume 8, 'swinging addis', but it doesn't engage me as much). On the subject of music from africa, I also have been enjoying Orchestra Baobab's 'Pirate's Choice' and (perhaps more) 'Bamba', and do not hesitate to recommend them. Anyone know where to get Bembeya Jazz discs, aside from the recent reunion cd? Now, the next 2 (or 3) questions are inspired by posts from the list, but i've been saving them up... Second, a much longer time ago (i.e., several years) there was disscussion on the list about an album by kim suek-chul called 'shamanistic ceremonies of the eastern seaboard' (i think). Well, it's been several years of keeping my eyes open, and I still haven't found it. Does anyone know where one can purchase it (through mail-order)? [GEMM has it under 1 listing, with a dismal seller rating - 1.8 / 10] While I do not like to trade for legitimate releases, I would consider trading for a copy of this disc in the event it is truly impossible to acquire otherwise, and I have a sizeable collection of live unreleased zorn and other improv to offer in return. Email off-list. Third, and some not-so-long time ago, someone posted a micro-review of an indian movie Gumnaan. Again, where can one acquire this (in the US) on DVD? The more I read about it the more I feel I must experience it, and a dvd of it seems to spawn reviews without really existing. Happy October, Whit (who recommends the movie Suspiria....)

I've actually got a friend at ECM's U.S. office looking into this; didn't want to blow $26 apiece for what are bound to be fairly short discs, only to have them appear at mid-price sometime next year. I'm patient. I own the vinyl. But so far, it does appear that these are going to be Japanese exclusives. I wondered about the Globe Unity disc you mention. I also wondered why they'd issued Music Improvisation Company and Dave Holland/Barre Phillips, but not Derek Bailey/Dave Holland. Maybe there's another batch coming. And actually, the one I'm lusting after most isn't an ECM, but a former MPS: Cecil Taylor's 'Live in the Black Forest.' I'll let you know when I hear something more. Unexpected reissues on Universal Japan

Universal (Japan) started to reissue some jewels of European improv. I noticed that ECM/Japo's IMPROVISATIONS by The Globe Unity was already available (as well as the Music Improvisation Company from the same label). Does anybody know if COMPOSITIONS by The Globe Unity will also be reissued (one of my top ten favorites)? Patrice (still under the shock). PS: this might already been known but I cannot resist to say that FMR will reissue (soon) Trevor Watt's Amalgam fantastic WIPE OUT!!! Yes, the one with Keith Rowe playing rock guitar :-).
