George Pelecanos' crime fiction orbits around music fandom, and several of his novels hinge around a record store in Washington DC - the protagonists are constantly listening to and arguing about records, going to concerts, etc. Dennis Cooper's characters are often punk-rock obsessives, too, though you'd probably scare timid students w/ Cooper. The Bear Comes Home by Rafi Zabor is a celebration and explanation of the jazz aesthetic as experienced by a saxophone wielding bear. Cameos by Lester Bowie, Steve McCall, Ornette Coleman and others pepper the pages. High Fidelity by Nick Hornby draws a correlation between pop music and love. Harmony of the World, a short story by Charles Baxter, explores the distinction between doing and feeling in life and in music. The story is found in a collection bearing the same name. The Exes by Pagan Kennedy follows a post-punk garage band through its artistic and romantic (and i don't mean that in a "romance novel" sort of way) adventures. The Wishbones by Tom Perotta introduces readers to a wedding band guitarist who's afraid to get married. Great Jones Street by Don Delillo asks readers to ponder the question: Where do art and commerce merge, if they were ever separate in the first place, in rock and roll? Meet the Imperonsators! by Lynne Barrett is a short story set in 1986 that, again, uses a band format to explore relationships. It can be found in her excellent collection The Secret Names of Women. Sonny's Blues by James Baldwin is....well, damn, just read it. Good luck with the class! Tom

someone said that this box was better as an academic study than a musical listening. although i am a huge fan of '70s miles, i'd have to agree. guitar fans may find the most to like about this: two takes and two inserts for "willie nelson," including the part used for "yesternow" -- all featuring sonny sharrock. and then two versions with mclaughlin. mclaughlin is a very strong presence throughout. five parts of "go ahead john" -- blessedly, his solo that showed up on "big fun" has removed the fader (left to right) and fly-in-a-jar effects. and his blues playing on "archie moore" is terrific -- like nothing i've ever heard from him before. an unreleased version of "duran" also finds mclaughlin delightful -- "that's some raunchy shit, john" says miles at the end. an unreleased version of "honky tonk" is of interest. and the 23 minutes of free jam on two versions of "the mask" feature grossman, corea, jarrett, hancock, mclaughlin, holland, dejohnette and airto -- of interest, since some of these cats where going between free and fusion at the time. so not counting the much improved sound of the original "jack johnson" album, you could easily find room on one CD for the highlights. imho the rest is for somebody really tripping out on minutae and how the peices sounded before teo put them together. twice all the way through to pluck out the highlights was more than enough for me. there's a good track-by-track, blow-by-blow by rod sibley at allaboutjazz.com, if the site is up again. martin np. sex mob -- dime store grind ... featuring roswell rudd and several other guests. the best sex mob yet. moaning, greasy. electric slide trumpet sounds great. wonderful arranging and duke-ish use of individual voices, both in solos and ensembles. zorn-meets-wynton with funk, perhaps, but for all of the familiar elements i've never heard anything quite like it.

Here's my mini-review (I'm not much of a writer so bear with me): A soundtrack in classic sense of the word. There is a nice main theme that gets reworked across the tracks with different instruments and arrangements. Very Morricone-esque, which seems to me to be further reinforced by the use of a recorder to carry the main theme on several tracks. Beautiful guitar work (from Otomo I think) is prevalent through most tracks as well, one even veering into slightly more extreme territory with some feedback at the end. Overall, a typical Otomo soundtrack. Saw this list of upcoming concerts in December for Otomo Yoshihide in Japan on the IMJ website. Among several shows with Anode, there's this offering: 14 (Sun.) Yoshihide Otomo, Bill Laswell and Yasuhiro Yoshigaki at Shinjuku Pit Inn in Tokyo. 15 (Sun.) Yoshihide Otomo, Bill Laswell and Yasuhiro Yoshigaki at Shinjuku Pit Inn in Tokyo. Very strange to see Laswell playing with Otomo. I wonder what's going on.

Got this from the latest Playing by Ear Mailing. Apparently a new Tzadik release forthcoming: $22 FIER, ANTON: Dreamspeed/Blindlight 1992-1994 2CD (TZ 7609). "Anton Fier is well-known in rock circles as the drummer for the Feelies, the original Lounge Lizards and mastermind of the Golden Palominos, but these two CDs, both long out of print many well be his best work." Nice to see Dreamspeed reissued again. My favorite work by Fier. But Blind Light is great as well.

Hello Patrice and other zorn-listers, I looked at the new discography (of Zorn) and again it is a great source of information. Now, I was wondering about about an 8"-flexi record that I own. This is a record of Rin Kotogawa, a Japanese guitar player. According to the sleeve the record is produced by John Zorn, but as the record was recorded live at The Kitchen in NY on sep.23 1987 (at the JapanFest) and you hear Zorn announcing Rin Kotogawa, I was wondering if the "production" did not just mean that Zorn was the one who organized this evening at The Kitchen...
