dang, i've been going through a spell of way too much work...not enough fun. all the while my zorn digests are piling up. so i've missed all of the 'cd copying fun'. very frustrating. here's a question: i'm at this moment listening to a cd called "Homegoing" by the Skip Heller Quartet. is it 'illegal copying' to burn a cd of this so that i can listen to it in my car? i actually have neither the means nor the interest to do this....just curious...since a lot of the 'combatants' in this discussion seemed to think that the mere act of making the copy is illegal. mark -- Mark Saleski - marks(a)foliage.com | http://www.foliage.com/~marks "Music is a beautiful opiate, if you don't take it too seriously." - Henry Miller

I have William Parker's Raining on the Moon and D.J. Spooky's Optometry. Both of the are wonderful records. hello all.....again & other new york issues.

Hello again everyone. I have recently re-subscribed to the great list-o-zorn. I had to unregister awhile back due to pc issues, but let us put that unplesantness behind us shall we. So what made me reup now is this. I am going (comeing for those allready there) to NYC for new years! I will be in from the 28th untill the 4th. & just yesterday purchased my tickets for Tonic on the 31st. Needless to say, I am marginaly pleased to be able to atend this event. I was wondering a few things. First, what to expect from the Ribot & Masada set. I have never gotten the chance to see Zorn, living in the mid west is a curse for enthusiests' of such as we. I only have tickets for the first set. Was this a bad idea? Long story, but the group decision was made to not see Honda's group, though it looks like I will miss the second Masada set. :( Secondly & more importantly, I have the typical New York tourist questions, though not to typical i hope. What record stores should I go to? Are there any other musical events I should be aware of? & whats a avant-contry boy to do in the big city on new years? Steal. Go ahead. Who cares? Especially steal from Zorn. Everyone complains about the big labels but who has the higher prices? If I would have paid for even half of the Zorn cd's i have, i would have missed my rent and been living on the streets. I could buy almost any major label release for $5 less than any TZadik release. I even got my friends into him, and then they went out and bought his cd's. You know he didnt get the fans from mtv or the radio. Where's my advertisement fee? Then I pay money to go see him live and you never know what you are gonna get. When it's good, its great but he really fuckin sucks sometimes. Who knows, maybe the next time I goto one of his improvs and he sounds like a cheap imitation of himself, the best thing for me to do would be to start talking. His predictable outburst could wind up being the best part of the show. Just test him and see how far he can actually be pushed by a fan. Back to my original argument. I have been buying cd's (tapes/records) and going to concerts on a regular basis for almost 20 years now. I couldn't even begin to imagine how much money I have spent on music. I also have put out cd's before and know exactly how much things cost. All labels, big or small owe me. I am a loyal lifelong customer of all varieties of music dedicated to adding the best cd's I can to my collections. Some I pay for, some I dont. If I have a choice between a cd and a concert, the concert wins because I can burn the cd. Right now, there are ways for me to get great music for free. I don't care if I am right or wrong and I don't care if what I am doing is illegal. I am going to take as much as I can while the free music is still available. And I will especially take as much from Zorn as I can because his cd's are way too expensive for me too keep up with. Zorn products should start coming with money back guarantees. CONTEST: Who will make the most intelligent comments in response to this email?? Winner gets a burned copy of every single cd John Zorn ever played on. ($50,000 value)
