Glenn, I said "serious DJs" will love this contest. Then you changed it to "professional DJs and producers". I agree if you are a DJ who already has a name for himself then this contest is not necessary. But if you are a serious DJ who is trying to get him or herself known winning a contest like this would look great on your resume. This contest is what it is. Complaining about it because it isn't what you want it to be is ridiculous. Thats like seeing an elephant and complaining he is not a giraffe. Any up and coming DJ will see this as a great opportunity for publicity. The Soul On Ice remix contest a few years ago yielded around 300 mixes. I think the winner won money and some sound equipment and of course they got the recognition of winning the contest. The winning mix was never sold by Yello or the Start AB website. All the mixes were downloadable by members of the site for free. I'm not sure how Beatport runs their contests but if they end up selling a CD or something with the winning track on it that is a small price to pay. The publicity one will get every time the mix is heard and the winning DJ's name is attached to it is priceless. I would work for free for that kind of recognition. Yello isn't doing this for the remix! I think they are fully capable of making their own. Don't you? They are doing this for their own publicity and giving fans a chance of a lifetime to remix their own Yello song. I am an artist and I have done several shows for free just because I knew I would be getting great publicity. I can pretty much guarantee that the DJs who will win this contest are not in the group of people complaining about the stipulations of this event. True champions take what is put before them and make the best of it. I am not sure what contests you have ever been in, but every contest I have ever been in you do have to pay to enter the contest. Any official contest there is some kind of entry fee. In sporting events the higher you are ranked the more you have to pay to enter. The remix event is a "contest". If you think you got what it takes to win then pay the fee. Put up or shut up as they say. , Jonathan

Big difference..... We know what you meant. Wether you are serious or professional, or professional but not serious, this contest is designed to make money off downloads and then publicity for Yello, without paying what is right.

I have no interest in the contest so I am not complaining about it for me. It's just not very good ethics. You can say I am complaining because it isnt what it should be for those who enter. If they want the best possible remix, and the maximum amount of publicity, why not release the remix files as Creative Commons free downloads, spread on torrent networks, archive.org and from Yello's own site? That way even more people would see/hear the music and possibly enter the contest.

Really? How many copies will a Yello remix CD sell? 500.000 maybe? One million? You know how much money royalties from such sales will mean for one person who remixed one track?

Sure, but you would still do the remix for free if the remix files were available for free to everyone.

Of course, and what Jon does should apply to everyone, right?
