For synth, check out works by Richard Kirk (the non-vocal half of Cabaret Voltaire).  He's been doing wonderful instrumental electronica albums under different monnikers (His own name, "Sandoz", "Electronic Eye", "Al Jabr", "Nitrogen", "Trafficante" - i could go on) since CV amiably split 12 years ago or so.  He uses layers and rhythms in amazing ways, and has been very prolific.  Much of his catalog is now on iTunes.  If interested, check out: http://brainwashed.com/cv/ .  Aside from him, IMHO Orbital has been one of the iconic electronica artists since their inception in 1990.

For eighties...
I agree about H17 and Human League.  The thing to mention about League Unlimited Orchestra is that the remixes are mostly instrumental and show the strength of their music.

My eighties bands, aside from Yello, were Simple Minds (New Gold Dream is my favorite album since it was released 24 years ago), Cabaret Voltaire (note the Microphonies poster in Ferris Beuler's bedroom), and OMD.  OMD I felt had some of the most consistantly wonderful melodies in pop music and at the time I was a raging fan.  It wasn't until years later I saw that Andy's lyrics were somewhat weak.  Oh but the songs were fun.  I'd also add Erasure, Oingo Boingo, and Depeche Mode (until they got too weighty).  I also agree about Lene Lovich and Thomas Dolby (until Hyperactive).

Of course I loved Yello and have been a big fan of them since I saw the video for "I Love You" in 1983. Boris moving the pumps just did me in.  I'd also include New Order and of course Joy Division, even though they weren't really an 80's band.  I agree about Propaganda.  I bought their first 12" when it was new and was amazed.  If anyone is interested, they just released a boxed set recently with the entire catalog as well as the Act.

It's ironic for me that my 80's collection now (mostly digital) is vastly larger than it was during the period.  Gotta love the internet!

Also, being a urban gay man, I'm required by law to love musical theater and most anything Sondheim (and I do).  But I'll spare the group the details...

Yeah, finally some Heaven 17, and Human League.  My fav of theirs is 'UNLIMITED ORCHESTRA, an LP which plays like a Compilation of special remixed versions, but instead of a short MEGAMIX, they do full versions and mix them together!  Way Cool!!!!!
