I’ve asked Boris why don’t they release the re-masters on SACD. He said something about the old recordings being to low of quality or bits or something. Can some musicians elaborate on this?
I'll bite on this one. I would say that it's the same reason so many are dissatisfied with the lack of quality in the provided samples for the remix contest - quality cannot come from crap. In other words, the old recordings are only of a certain quality. Re-mastering them to SACD would not add any quality to them - not more than already exists with the current CDs. As an example [and the arbitrary numbers are just for the sake of example], say that the old master material is of quality = q08. A standard CD is CAPABLE of a quality of q16. An SACD is CAPABLE of a quality of q24. Putting the old recording onto a CD doesn't make the recording automatically q16; putting it on an SACD doesn't automatically /make/ it q24. It's still q08, just sitting on a disc /capable/ of q24. Think of scanning an old polaroid foto. The act of scanning it doesn't add to the resolution. It's still a scan of a low-quality foto - even if the scan was made at 24bits. Think of going to all the work to create a remix with compressed original samples, and then having the remix contest hooligans try and tell you that if you win, they will somehow kammagically wave their iWands and Remaster Your Remix With High Quality!
