I too would love for someone to demostrate and teach a few things. I fall into the newbie category, so I have lots to learn. I am in John's class, so I'll be learning how to grind my own mirror and building a dobsonian. I didn't make it to the impromptu meeting last Thursday night, but this coming Saturday my schedule is favorable (the weather forecast sounds good and I think it is also a new moon). --- Jim Gibson <jimgibson00@yahoo.com> wrote:

I was thinking of doing something like this in connection with UVAA. Since UVAA doesn't have regular meetings and I get all the meetings I need at SLAS it would be kind of nice to see everybodys face in the light and people can demonstrate some aspect of astronomy that works for them; just basic stuff. You know, bring your Subway sandwiches and munch while for a while, nothing really formal.
The problem with suggesting such a thing usually means the suggestor gets the job, and I dont mind as long as it doesnt become a regular job. It would probably fizzle after a while, after the willing in the group had their chance, but what the hey.
There seems to be a lot of new blood in Utah Valley and Old Timers like Rich Tenney could teach us a lot (he he he). Actually everybody ought to have something that works for them and could demonstrate it. We ought to be able to show how collimation basics are really done with and with out a laser pointer. We ought to spend some time (after the sun goes down) just pointing out constellations. We ought to show what sky chats work well, what interesting objects are in current constellations, what comets are around, asteroids, telescope building, binoculars, all kinds of fun things.
I am thinking that it would have to be on an off weekend when SLAS wasnt having a Star Party and the moon didnt come up till after 10 or 11 or something. Or when the moon goes down at 2AM we could meet at 2:30 AM uhhh. What? No taker on that one.
Just throwing this out to everyone on the list to see if there is any interest. This could beat the heck out of a meeting. Even Rob on Maui could come, or better yet, Rob could through down some futons and we will visit him.

For those of you not going down to St. George, John and I thought we would give a star party on Fri, or Sat night. We could go to the Pit n' Pole, or we could meet somewhere closer to town. If we meet someplace a bit closer in, we will have more people come out to see the stars. There is a place near Harriman in SL county, but still close to UT county that may be a good sight. Satuday night sounds really good to me, and I would like to go to the Pit n' Pole site (I am in Utah county). I will have two 11 year-olds with me, my son, and one of his friends (his parent are away in a cruise and we are taking care of him). I need something to keep them entertained and I don't like them roting their minds with video games :-) Anyway, My son had some "Wow" moments last week when we saw Saturn from our driveway in our little trahscope, and I think we would like to see what a 10 or 12 inch instrument can show. Perhaps he would get excited enough to help me built the new one (I am in your class later this month). --- John and Lisa Zeigler <john@johnstelescopes.com> wrote:

Hey Lisa John Lundwall here. Would love to go out again on Saturday. Pit n pole is closest to me as I am in Salem. Jim, moon watch would be great. Any time and any place. My name is Erik Mourtgos, I'm a college student at BYU majoring in choral education. I've been dabbling in Astronomy since December, due to the cold however, I did not get that much observation done in the winter. It is warming up however, and I have been outside more. I am really a beginner . I only have some 12X50 binoculars and a tripod. If a star party is getting thrown together, I would love to go. Could you let me know where these places are. Thanks! Erik J. Aloha In the March 2004 S+T, Peter Michaud wrote an article about capturing star trails (pg126) via digital slr cameras and stacking in Photoshop. This article could be helpful to reduce noise in the digital image. I haven't taken it as far as Peter has gone but it does seem to be a way to make good crisp images w/ consumer digital cameras. aloha Rob
Here are some public star parties that have already been scheduled: http://slas.ws/calendar.asp?list=Yes&Year=2004&StarParty=1 http://planet.state.ut.us/STARPARTIES.HTML Patrick

We have had a few replies for the Pit n' Pole Saturday night. Looks like its on. We will be happy to meet everyone at the gas station on SR 73 and Redwood Road at 6 PM on Saturday. We will have our 12.5" F8 and our 8" F4 as well as our binocs and parallelogram. We will bring movies for the kids to watch and treats for everyone. I think we will bring our star party signs so its easier to find the dirt road that goes back to the P n'P. I think we will also have a laser pointer by this Saturday, so anyone wanting to learn constellations and the more obvious M objects, I would be happy to show some of those. We will see those of you wanting to come on Saturday. I will come out as well, possibly bringing my kids (11 & 7) with me as well. I'll bring both my Meade 8" and 5" scopes with me and a GPS to pinpoint the location coordinates. Hopefully someone there will have experience adjusting the LXD-55 mount so it works correctly with the Autostar functions. If not, I can at least run it manually again.
Darren, John thinks he will be able to help you out. Make sure you bring your manual so he can go over the settings just in case. Thanks!
