Reminder that there will be a workshop Satruday April 10th at Fort Utah in Proveo. The schedule will be as follows: April 10th l train, collimation - John Zeigler Fort Provo The following is the schedule of events (times are in Daylight-Savings-Time). 6:30 - 7:00 PM Arrive and set up 7:00 7:45 PM John Zeigler will give a workshop on the Optic Train and Collimation. Please dont setup during Johns workshop. For the optical train (which naturally leads to collimation), we have a cute 4.5" truss tube that we take apart and pass the components around. Typically we teach collimation at the end of our classes when everyone had a completed telescope. For the Moon Watch, our 8" F4 scope would also be a good hands on teaching aid. It is short enough that most people can turn the collimation knobs while looking through the focuser. As you are aware, I do not own, or typically even use a laser collimator. I will some times borrow a laser collimator, but honestly I can get the collimation better without one when I spend the time to do it. Some day, I may get a Cheshire, but so far have done a pretty good job by "eyeballing" it. To teach collimation, I will cover the concentric rings concept. Then if time permits, I will show how to collimate the scope by a star test. I can also show how to take a film canister to make a collimation aid. If there is a distant stationary light, like a radio tower, this will work good for this star collimation lesson since the point of light does not move. However, there are about four ways to collimate a scope by star light, and so far, I have only taught one method, and mentioned a second one at a UVAA star party. I will probably only teach the first method at the Moon Watch 7:45 8:00 PM Jim Gibson will give a short presentation on moon features. 8:01 PM the sun sets. 8:02 PM Those who came late can finish setting up. 8:02 9:00 PM people cruse the line of scopes looking at moon features and other fine objects. 9:00 9:30 PM There may be an impromptu class on constellation identification. We must clear the park by 11:00 PM. Jim Gibson --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Small Business $15K Web Design Giveaway - Enter today
Thanks for the reminder. Look like the weather may cooperate. The sky clock shows decent conditions, (http://cleardarksky.com/csk/getcsk.php?id=SpnsFkUT) not great compared to a dark site, but good enough from some seeing from the city. --- Jim Gibson <jimgibson00@yahoo.com> wrote:

Sorry I couldn't stay longer last night. Thanks for the colimation instructions and the main moon features. I wanted to do some observing after a few days of cloudiness and rain. For those who stayed, I am curious on how much you were able to see, and what rating would you give the viewing conditions. I live close to the park so I sort of share the same light polution from my backyard. TIA __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Jim was already there talking with someone (the name escapes me at the moment). We saw people drive by and awalk by and the leave. The scopes were not set until past 7:30 when John and Lisa arrived. I guess we should make a sign or something for next time. --- Heather Wilde <danther2wilde@yahoo.com> wrote:

Sorry we were so late that night. We did get there by 7, but we drive down there all the way from Magna, and our kids had to use the rest rooms, and there weren't any open at the park so... It took longer to get everything out than we had hoped. Next time we will allow more time for things like that (we are also trying to get ready to go to a convention this week in New York, and weekend time was precious). We had a few people show up later in the evening after everyone else had gone, and they were able to look at quite a bit before we packed up and headed home. It did just get too windy and cold. I think we are going to have a repeat of this class on April 24. We will be at Fort Provo again at 7 pm? Tell me if that's correct Jim. This time we will not be working on stuff for a convention, and we will be early to the party and have signs set up so everyone will know we are there. I hope you will all give us a second chance to do this thing right. Sorry we missed some of you folks. There was a group that had possession of the pavilion when I got there at 6:30 PM but they were just finishing up. John Lundwall and David Trevino showed up before 7PM and we got talking about astronomy over by the pavilion (ready to pounce on it when the group left) and we must have missed you guys. John and Lisa didnt make it until about 7:30. When only a couple of us (that I knew of ) were there at 7PM, I figured most people stayed home because of the cold wind. We got started late but John did a segment on the light train and how an image is created at the focal plane. He further explained how to collimate a telescope by using 2 telescopes he brought. Everyone got a chance to peer into the focuser and try to identify 7 concentric circles that John had explained using a white board. It was all very interesting to me and I think the others really enjoyed it too. I had my binoculars setup on a parallelogram and we could see 2 BYU students making out on Y Mountain; at least that was reported by some of the younger folks with very good eyes. I should have set up the binoculars earlier so people would know were to congregate. Sorry, that was my fault. I was doing some calculations, May 1st could be a good day for Moon observing. The moon would be out early and about 80% full. Hopefully the weather will be warmer. --- Jim Gibson <jimgibson00@yahoo.com> wrote:

Next time Ill stay longer, but figured no one was coming due to the cold wind. so I went out to SPOC and got some viewing in there. Dan --- Jim Gibson wrote:
