Hello Fellow Gravel-Pitters, Since many of you are talking about a Friday trip to the gravel pit, I will come too. I have several newbie friends that will come with me. I live down here in Provo so the gravel pit is perfectly close for us. Sean Humpherys

FYI, some of us from Utah County may be at the gravel pit Friday night for any of you that want to join us there and brave the cold, weather permitting. Gravel Pit directions follow (also on the UVAA webpage under messages, general discussion, July 1 2003 post). Sorry for you folks in SLC, these directions are written for someone coming up Provo Canyon, but Exit 4 is the same one to take if you are coming from the other direction: ---------- Drive up Provo Canyon and through Heber as you normally would to get to Park City; from I-80 take the Park City/Kamas Exit 4. At the bottom of the exit ramp, go East (right) towards Kamas. Take this road for 1.6 miles to the Peoa - Oakley turn-off. This turn-off will be on your left. You know you are approaching it because there are several "Deer-Crossing Ahead" signs. Since the Deer Crossing is at the turn off, the distances on the signs are also the distances to the turn-off. This is Browns Canyon, but the sign says Peoa - Oakley. Take this road for 4.2 miles, to the Park City Harper Gravel Pit road and sign on the left. (About 1000 feet before you get to the gravel pit road, there will be an orange sign on the right that says "truck entrance ahead".) At the gravel pit sign, turn in. Watch out for the speed bump at the entrance! Go about one and a half miles up this road. There is a "mobile home" weighing office off to the left. Just after the office there is a parking area (for the office), which is where we set up. Park towards the far side of the parking area, so that your vehicles are not blocking scopes that are set up to view towards the South and East, which is where the best skies are. This is only a star party. There are no amenities, and no camping. Let me emphasize, this is not a "spend the night and camp out" location. Please use good star party etiquette; dim headlights if arriving after dark, and be sure to bring red lights for wandering between scopes, etc. so you don't spoil dark-adapted eyes. ---------------------------- There may be folks both nights up there, again, I plan to try and be there on Friday (no promises yet). Dress WARM like you would be to go skiing at night... -Rich --- Don and Kathryn Mechling <dkmechling@herbsfirst.com> wrote:

Directions to the Pit 'n Pole (Rush Valley Site) See Map at: http://www.utahastronomy.com/JimS/Pit_nPole
From I-15 get off at the Lehi exit by the Lehi Roller Mills. That is exit #282 or the UT-73 exit. Go west through Lehi on State Road 73.
Continue west on SR 73 across the Jordan River, straight through the intersection of Redwood Road (1700 W.) by Smith's, (this is the corner where the group will meet up, look for a blue van with a ladder on top.) up the hill passed Eagle Mountain and out to Cedar Fort. The road will turn south for 5 miles to Fairfield then West again for about 5 miles up to 5-mile pass. At 5-mile pass you should see motorcycles and 4-wheelers having a good time (if it's light). As you top the hill at 5-mile pass you will see the road slope down and curve to the North. About a quarter of a mile or less after the top, take the first paved road left (West on FAUST ROAD). Look at your odometer and figure out that it will be in 4.2 miles. Go west for 4.2 miles. You will know that you are almost there when the road turns slightly to the left (about 4 miles) and there is a small rise in the road. After the rise, the road dips and about 100 yards or so later is another rise. Turn left (South) on the road that takes off at the top of that second rise. (John and I will place a sign at the beginning of this road). Go south about a quarter of a mile and as the road bends to the right there will be another dirt road, obscured by sage brush until you are right on it, going to the west (right) (Another Star party sign). Take that road west until you see a poll sticking out of the ground with a pit near by. The Pit 'n Pole is only about a quarter of a mile from the last turn. See you Saturday night! Hi Everyone, I was on the list of people going to the gravel pit on Friday night. Just wanted to let you all know I won't be able to make it. I didn't want you to wonder what happened to me! We'll definitely plan on the next get together. Hope you have fun! Dottie
How long does it take to get to the gravel pit from the mouth of Provo Canyon? Is it relatively easy to find? I'm not familiar with that area. Dottie

Was anyone still planning on going to the pit n' Pole on Saturday, or should we just do the gravel pit on Friday. It would be nice to get as big a group as possible at one or the other. Lisa Zeigler

John and our kids will be there. I'm going to bring a flat screen 17" computer monitor and speakers for them to watch a DVD with, and I will bring lots of treats and cool aid for them to snack on because they get bored easily. If anyone is bringing kids, and you think they would like to watch the movies, bring a folding chair with you for them. I think it will be fairly warm this Saturday in the west dessert, but in case its not, make sure you dress your kids really warm and bring blankets, they get tired of the cold too easy! I will be brining my two kids on Saturday (11 and 7). Are there still plans to meet at the service station near Eagle Mountain at 6:00? I've never been up to the viewing area before, and the directions/map make it seem easy to get lost. BTW I played around with my scope last night (rebalancing, training the drive, etc..) and had better success with the AutoStar computer. I was able to take fuzzy pictures of Saturn, Jupitor as well as a couple of star clusters. M13 would have turned out really nice, except there were too many street lights and porch lights directly east of my driveway, which made it impossible to see well enough to focus. I don't anticipate that being a problem up in the mountains. I need to get some sort of filter to cover the LCD screen of my digital camera, because even at the lowest brightness setting, it's too bright for Astronomy. I read somewhere online that there is some sort of red foil you can get? Does anyone know of a local retailer in this area that sells something suitable to filter out an LCD screen? I still want to be able to zoom in on images and check the focus, I just don't want to ruin my night vision or that of others around me... On Wed, 2004-03-17 at 08:44, John and Lisa Zeigler wrote:

Hi - is it Smiths, or the gas station on the west side of Redwood Road as the meeting place? What cars are we looking for? thanks, Kathryn
Why don't we just meet in the Smiths parking lot, farther away from the building. My van would be very conspicuous because it will have a ladder on top of the roof rack. So if you are looking for the group, look in the Smiths parking lot, I own a Blue Mazda Van with a black and yellow ladder on top. We would be happy to lead a group out there, and we will be placing signs so anyone not with the group can find us fairly easily. We will plan on leaving Smiths just a few minutes after 6 PM on Saturday for the Pit n' Pole. This is going to be really fun! One of our Students from our telescope making classes, Stan Thomas, has gone to the Pit n' Pole and taken pictures and GPS coordinates. I thought I would pass them along to you so that if you aren't able to meet us at 6 PM at SR 73 & Redwood Rd. you may still be able to come out and join us later on. John and I will be there until at least 11 PM. I'm sure many will stay later than that. The drive out to the Pit n' Pole only takes about half an hour or less from Lehi. We hope you are able to join us and see some really great night sky objects! http://renfield.physics.utah.edu/pitnpole/ This link will show you the GPS coordinates and some maps and pictures of the site. Below are new instructions for getting there, with comments and GPS by Stan. Thanks Stan!! Directions to the Pit 'n Pole (Rush Valley Site) See Map at: <http://www.utahastronomy.com/JimS/Pit_nPole> http://www.utahastronomy.com/JimS/Pit_nPole
From I-15 get off at the Lehi exit by the Lehi Roller Mills. That is exit #282 or the UT-73 exit. Go west through Lehi on State Road 73.
Continue west on SR 73 across the Jordan River, straight through the intersection of Redwood Road (1700 W.) by Smith's, (this is the corner where John and Lisa will meet up with you.) up the hill passed Eagle Mountain and out to Cedar Fort. The turn is located at: 40.23088 N 112.18405 W. Look at your odometer and figure out that it will be in 4.2 miles. Go west for 4.2 miles. It looked like almost 4.4 miles on my odometer. You will know that you are almost there when the road turns slightly to the left (about 4 miles) and there is a small rise in the road. After the rise, the road dips and about 100 yards or so later is another rise. Turn left (South)on the road that takes off at the top of that second rise. (John and I will place a sign at the beginning of this road). This turn is located at: 40.21300 N 112.26323 W Go south about a quarter of a mile and as the road bends to the right. Go 0.37 miles south there will be another dirt road, obscured by sage brush until you are right on it, going to the west (right) (Another Star party sign). This turn to the west is located at: 40.20792 N 112.26157 W. Take that road west until you see a poll sticking out of the ground with a pit near by. The Pit 'n Pole is only about a quarter of a mile from the last turn. Go 0.32 miles west. The pole is located at: 40.20727 N, 112.26765 W, 1546 meters If you just cant find us and you happen to have a cell phone, you can call 560-7539, this is our cell phone number. Hi all, I've been watching the Utah sky's using satellite photos. There is a large clouds system that is just starting to cover us and it extends west to Reno Nevada. Unless a grand miracle happens, it looks like the could cover is here to stay. If want to see the photos yourself, go to weather.com enter your zip code click "more local maps" below the doppler radar map The click "WesternCentral US Satellite" You'll see the cloud system that I'm talking about.
