This is a message I cut from the WWW.UVAA.org site that give's directions to the quarry coming from the Provo area these are Rich Tenney's directions so if you get lost it's not my fault ;) just kidding, I am from North Ogden so I did'nt use these..... There's a good dark sky site about an hour's drive from Utah County just east of Park City/Kamas that some folks from SLAS will be at this coming Thurs. July 3 if any are interested. Here's how to get there: Drive up Provo Canyon and through Heber as you normally would to get to Park City; from I-80 take the Park City/Kamas Exit 4. At the bottom of the exit ramp, go East (right) towards Kamas. Take this road for 1.6 miles to the Peoa - Oakley turn-off. This turn-off will be on your left. You know you are approaching it because there are several "Deer-Crossing Ahead" signs. Since the Deer Crossing is at the turn off, the distances on the signs are also the distances to the turn-off. This is Browns Canyon, but the sign says Peoa - Oakley. Take this road for 4.2 miles, to the Park City Harper Gravel Pit road and sign on the left. (About 1000 feet before you get to the gravel pit road, there will be an orange sign on the right that says "truck entrance ahead".) At the gravel pit sign, turn in. Watch out for the speed bump at the entrance! Go about one and a half miles up this road. There is a "mobile home" weighing office off to the left. Just after the office there is a parking area (for the office), which is where we set up. Park towards the far side of the parking area, so that your vehicles are not blocking scopes that are set up to view towards the South and East, which is where the best skies are. This is only a star party. There are no amenities, and no camping. Let me emphasize, this is not a "spend the night and camp out" location. Please use good star party etiquette; dim headlights if arriving after dark, and be sure to bring red lights for wandering between scopes, etc. so you don't spoil dark-adapted eyes. -----Original Message----- From: David Trevino [mailto:dotrevino@yahoo.com] Sent: Monday, October 27, 2003 11:17 AM To: Utah Valley Astronomy Association Subject: RE: [UVAA] How to find the gravel quarry, the wedge, etc? I also would like directions, coming from the Provo area. I am too like Steve, an occasional stargazer, although I just acquired a 4.5" telescope for my b-day. I have done some observing from my backyard and driveway, and despite the street lights, I have been able to observe Orion's Nebula. --- Griffin Louis A Civ OO-ALC/MAKGBA <Louis.Griffin@HILL.af.mil> wrote:
Which direction are you coming from Steve?

I'm much more accurately called an occasional stargazer than an amateur astronomer. I own binoculars, but not a telescope and the only star parties I've been to have been at Mark Dakin's old house up Hobblecreek Canyon and a couple down on the valley floor. Having said that, when I can find the time I like to get out and see the stars or whatever else is in our sky.
While I couldn't make it on Saturday (I was at Zion N.P.) I would like to go to the gravel quarry sometime. Having never been there, I'd need slightly better directions than "east of Park City." Rich, do you or anyone else reading this have directions or GPS coordinates for me? I'm looking at a map of that area and I can see "Quarry Mountain" to the north of Park City, but since that isn't really east I'm assuming you're talking about someplace else.
What about this place called "the wedge" I hear people refer to? Coordinates or directions to that anyone? Anyone else have a favorite observing spot they'd like to share?
I appreciate it. :)
