Directions to the Pit 'n Pole (Rush Valley Site)
See Map at: http://www.utahastronomy.com/JimS/Pit_nPole
From I-15 get off at the Lehi exit by the Lehi Roller Mills. That is exit #282 or the UT-73 exit. Go west through Lehi on State Road 73.
Continue west on SR 73 across the Jordan River, straight through the intersection of Redwood Road (1700 W.) by Smith's, (this is the corner where the group will meet up, look for a blue van with a ladder on top.) up the hill passed Eagle Mountain and out to Cedar Fort.
The road will turn south for 5 miles to Fairfield then West again for about 5 miles up to 5-mile pass. At 5-mile pass you should see motorcycles and 4-wheelers having a good time (if it's light). As you top the hill at 5-mile pass you will see the road slope down and curve to the North.
About a quarter of a mile or less after the top, take the first paved road left (West on FAUST ROAD). Look at your odometer and figure out that it will be in 4.2 miles. Go west for 4.2 miles. You will know that you are almost there when the road turns slightly to the left (about 4 miles) and there is a small rise in the road. After the rise, the road dips and about 100 yards or so later is another rise. Turn left (South) on the road that takes off at the top of that second rise. (John and I will place a sign at the beginning of this road).
Go south about a quarter of a mile and as the road bends to the right there will be another dirt road, obscured by sage brush until you are right on it, going to the west (right) (Another Star party sign). Take that road west until you see a poll sticking out of the ground with a pit near by. The Pit 'n Pole is only about a quarter of a mile from the last turn.
See you Saturday night!

Thank you - didn't realize it was up in the mountains, not up to the cold. I'll save directions for warmer days. Do you have directions to the one on Saturday??? thanks, Kathryn Mechling

FYI, some of us from Utah County may be at the gravel pit Friday night for any of you that want to join us there and brave the cold, weather permitting.
Gravel Pit directions follow (also on the UVAA webpage under messages, general discussion, July 1 2003 post). Sorry for you folks in SLC, these directions are written for someone coming up Provo Canyon, but Exit 4 is the same one to take if you are coming from the other direction: ----------
Drive up Provo Canyon and through Heber as you normally would to get to Park City; from I-80 take the Park City/Kamas Exit 4. At the bottom of the exit ramp, go East (right) towards Kamas. Take this road for 1.6 miles to the Peoa - Oakley turn-off. This turn-off will be on your left. You know you are approaching it because there are several "Deer-Crossing Ahead" signs. Since the Deer Crossing is at the turn off, the distances on the signs are also the distances to the turn-off. This is Browns Canyon, but the sign says Peoa - Oakley.
Take this road for 4.2 miles, to the Park City Harper Gravel Pit road and sign on the left. (About 1000 feet before you get to the gravel pit road, there will be an orange sign on the right that says "truck entrance ahead".) At the gravel pit sign, turn in. Watch out for the speed bump at the entrance! Go about one and a half miles up this road. There is a "mobile home" weighing office off to the left. Just after the office there is a parking area (for the office), which is where we set up.
Park towards the far side of the parking area, so that your vehicles are not blocking scopes that are set up to view towards the South and East, which is where the best skies are.
This is only a star party. There are no amenities, and no camping. Let me emphasize, this is not a "spend the night and camp out" location.
Please use good star party etiquette; dim headlights if arriving after dark, and be sure to bring red lights for wandering between scopes, etc. so you don't spoil dark-adapted eyes.
----------------------------
There may be folks both nights up there, again, I plan to try and be there on Friday (no promises yet). Dress WARM like you would be to go skiing at night...
