Last night my son and I went to the Pit 'n Pole to do some observing. There as a small group of scouts camping so we parked on the other side of the pit using the van to block the light from their campsite. While we only stay a little over 2 hours (we started to get cold and tired) we were able to find many objects. Once we got the scope assembled and collimated, we took at peek at Orion's nebula, which of course is always a treat. The pleaides were great in the small scope, and I started hunting for the Crab Nebula, which I finally found. I found the 3 open clusters in Auriga, and I almost forgot, we enjoyed the view of the 1 -1/2 day old moon, mostly lit by earthshine. We found Andromeda, but it certainly was not at the best position. Then I split some doubles, like Castor and Rigel (My son liked Castor because of the difference in color) Saturn was a treat, given it's high position, and then we found for the first time some galaxies in Leo and Ursa Major. Jupiter was starting to come up, and we took a peak despite its low altitude in the horizon. However the air was pretty steady, and we saw about 3 or 4 of the cloud bands before we starting packing things up. Looking forward to the warmer climate, when we can observer for longer periods. Clear Skies. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
