Hello Everyone: If your schedule will permit, please plan on attending the final general meeting of the Salt Lake Astronomical Society on Tuesday, November 28th at 7:30pm. We will be meeting in the Engineering/Mines Classroom Building on the University of Utah campus, Room 105. This month's special guest speaker is Dr. Clark Christensen from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Brigham Young University. His topic is astrobiology. Here is a brief synopsis provided by Dr. Christensen: "The question of the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life is one that has been asked for a very long time. Those who asked the questions anciently may have been as close to guessing the correct answer as many current scientists. Giving careful consideration or at least intelligent speculation to this matter requires integrating knowledge from many fields. The astronomer, the chemist, the radio technician, the biologist, the social scientist and the theologian are all needed in a serious quest for answers. Dr. Chirstensen will address the question using the approach taken in the so-called Drake equation (Frank Drake, 1961). Consideration will be given to all of the factors in that equation, but most of the discussion will focus on those factors which are astronomical in nature." Please invite your friends and family so that we can fill the new classroom to capacity at 200 people!! The biography of Dr. Christensen is found on the SLAS website for those interested to learn more about our guest speaker. The easiest way to get to the new meeting venue in my opinion is to get on 100 South and head east from downtown Salt Lake. Continue east on 100 South Street past 1300 east as you enter the University of Utah campus. The road will take a sharp bend to the left heading north. The building on your left at the bend will be the Kennecott Building. Your may park for free at the Kennecott Building parking lot. Cross the street heading east again, walk a short distance and you will see the sign identifying the Engineering/Mines Classroom Building. We are in Room 105. See you there!! Lowell Lyon
