Barring a terrible turn in weather, I'm planning to set up for a couple of hours at Big Springs Park in South Fork Canyon (Provo) tonight. My step son is visiting from Sweden and wanted to have a look. Feel free to join me if you're in the mood to do so, and the weather decides to cooperate (no guarantees). /Rich

BSA astronomy merit badge star party following Orem Owlz game

I could use some help if anyone wants to join me at the the Owlz game this Friday the 31st. I have two extra tickets, and we will be setting up some small scopes on the field after the game (I'm bringing two, a refractor and a reflector), and will be talking about some of the things the merit badge covers. There are expected to be 40 boys, rotated through in 3 groups. Yes, it's a full moon that night (I'm not the one that planned this!). Timp Cave Star Party / Dark Sky Summer Program - looking for volunteers

I got this in my inbox today: Hi Rich,Timpanogos Cave National Monument would like to start a Dark Sky program this summer. We are partnering with the US Forest Service to present two programs this summer on the importance of preserving our night skies against light pollution. We are looking for an astronomy club to assist with a program in July and one in September. After a short presentation by a Ranger, we would like to have some telescopes available, with astronomers to introduce our visitors to interesting features of space and the night sky. Is there anyone on either list that could manage the July event? This is a really big deal, IMO, getting more National Park and Forest Service personnel interested and involved, and I don't want to blow this opportunity to make Utah a much more dark-sky friendly place! Please contact me directly (don't just hit reply to these lists) if you can help out in July. The dates she has in mind are the either the 10th or 11th, or the 17th or 18th (new moon is the 16th). These are Fridays/Saturdays. She has no idea yet how much interest this will generate. Her guess was 50, but I'm thinking it could turn out to be much higher. Need help with a Girl's Camp star party July 14-17

I got a request for help with a star party for an LDS Girl's Camp in Cedar City July 14-17. She wants to do the party on the night of the 15th, but I think she's flexible. It's in a huge cabin in the woods so I think light pollution would be low and you would be welcome to stay the night - there will be plenty of room. There was a 12" LX200 for sale around here last year for $3k I think; not sure what happened to it. That is itself a pretty hefty scope; I've had an 8" and 10" LX200 and even those were more than I could handle comfortably. Telescope mirror cleaning

Someone recently posted the following in the Criterion Dynascope email forum re: mirror cleaning, that I thought some of you might find useful/interesting. I had never heard of this stuff (and it's probably overkill, but what the heck)... "The best possible soap is Kodak PhotoFlo, which was designed as a last rinse for photographic film. It is the essence of all dish soaps, minus anything else. Still available from B&H and Adorama. Useful anytime you want to avoid water spots, like clear shower panels. It has to be diluted in distilled water 200:1 so a pint goes forever." FWIW,/Rich

I've volunteered to do a star party for approx. 60 girl scouts and their leaders (from Park City) at the Trefoil Girl Scout Camp at the end of Provo South Fork canyon on Friday November 14th (weather permitting). It should be dark by 7 p.m. that night. The director told me they will provide a spaghetti dinner at 6:30 for anyone bringing a telescope to help out. I will be there, and it would be great/helpful to have at least 2 other scopes there with me.
