Star Party Reminder for tomorrow (Wed.) evening in South Fork Canyon (Provo Canyon)

UVAA is doing a star party for an Elementary School this coming Wednesday evening (tomorrow night!) starting at 8pm in Provo/South Fork Canyon. Any of you SLAS-ers that want to come join us are more than welcome -- this is a semi-dark site, so your efforts won't be wasted! They are anticipating 70+ kids, so help is needed and appreciated. I'll be there with the 16-inch. It will formally begin at 8pm, but you'll want to be up there sooner to find a spot to set up while there's still some light. >From the mouth of Provo Canyon (starting the odometer where 800 North in Orem Crosses over on to University Ave.) it's 5.8 miles to Vivian Park/South Fork, just right off the highway there. Drive South into South Fork Canyon (narrow, winding road that begins at Vivian Park) 3.25 miles (you'll drive past another nice park on the way) to where you see a brown "National Forest Access" sign -- turn (right) in here. This is a newer park -- drive up another quarter mile and the road ends in a nice big flat parking lot. The sky is fairly dark here despite a somewhat limited horizon. There is a bathroom here and picnic tables if you want to bring dinner and the family along early. The current National Weather Service forecast looks promising. Help for a school star party

I got a call today from an elementary school that wants me to do a star party for the 6th graders down here in Utah Valley. I thought we would host it in Provo Canyon's South Fork Canyon (in the parking lot of the newer park about 4 miles up), weather permitting. They want to do it on Oct. 11th, which is a Wed. night from 8-9 or so. Anyone on the list able to make it and help out? There are 79 students. I don't know how many will actually come, but we can expect parents, siblings, etc., so we need several scopes! Please let me know by Monday so I can give him a yea or nay... A colleague at work showed me a Harbor Freight ad in a newspaper yesterday for 10x70 binoculars priced at $39.95 I don't know if all the stores carry them, or how good they might be, but at that price I imagine it's pretty hard to go too wrong with them. SLAS Blast - September General Meeting of the Salt Lake Astronomical Soceity

Hello everyone: The September general meeting of the Salt Lake Astronomical Society will be held on Tuesday, September 26th at 7:30pm. The meeting will be held at the Salt Lake County Government Center, 2001 S. State Street, North Building. The special guest speaker this month will be Richard Erwin from the College of Eastern Utah in Price. Prior to his teaching in Price, Mr. Erwin was well known for his years of astronomy instruction at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. Mr. Erwin will offer a PowerPoint presentation all about astrophotography. It will begin with a brief discussion of film, and move quickly into CCD imaging. He will talk about the relative advantages and disadvantages of each, and will include representative images from various aspects of the two mediums. He will mention FASTAR as he has images taken with that system. He will end up the talk with a discussion of various computer software processing techniques, again with appropriate photos to illustrate the points.
