How to find the gravel quarry, the wedge, etc?

I'm much more accurately called an occasional stargazer than an amateur astronomer. I own binoculars, but not a telescope and the only star parties I've been to have been at Mark Dakin's old house up Hobblecreek Canyon and a couple down on the valley floor. Having said that, when I can find the time I like to get out and see the stars or whatever else is in our sky. While I couldn't make it on Saturday (I was at Zion N.P.) I would like to go to the gravel quarry sometime. Having never been there, I'd need slightly better directions than "east of Park City." Rich, do you or anyone else reading this have directions or GPS coordinates for me? I'm looking at a map of that area and I can see "Quarry Mountain" to the north of Park City, but since that isn't really east I'm assuming you're talking about someplace else. What about this place called "the wedge" I hear people refer to? Coordinates or directions to that anyone? Anyone else have a favorite observing spot they'd like to share? Kiddie Scope

My apologies to those who have asked to be removed from this discussion, but isn't the UVAA list for local astronomers (and distant friends) to talk about this hobby and what they are doing to spread the joy of star gazing? That is unless I am mistaken. If I knew how to filter out specific individuals, I would, but I do not know if that is possible. So I apologize in advance to those who do not want this thread. This Kiddie scope is one my wife designed. We will be teaching a mini telescope making class at a Montessori School in Bountiful next month. The kids in the class will be building these scopes with either the 4.5", 6", or 8" mirror from kits we are putting together. We traded some grinding turntables for some of the Meade 4.5" mirror sets from Bill Kelly who used to be a member of SLAS but has since moved down to Arizona. We are trying to put together a set of plans for this scope, and to put pictures up on our web site of the scope along with details on how to build it. (Patrick, I'll let you know when we get those posted). I'll keep this one short. John R. I Like your combo. Now here is another fun scope that my wife designed and built in a day. We call it our Kiddie Scope (built for our 4 year old). A common question we get is ... Does that really work? Yes it does. It's made with with a Meade 4.5" F8 spherical mirror, Lumicon helical focuser, 1" secondary, Orion EZ Finder, and about 4 lbs of counterweight as the origional design was way too light. Overall, the entire scope including the counterweights is about 10-12 lbs. Again, one scope to do everything (wide field to deep observing AND bright) good luck. The solution in my opinion is to get a wide field refractor and mount it on the main scope. My old C-8 has an inexpensive 80mm refractor from Orion and sometimes is more fun than my C-8 or my 12.5, so get two scopes, it'll cost less and be much more fun. I won't build it by myself. I will either have Steve build it or maybe I should take one of your classes. I have only built one mirror and a mirror that size (20") needs someone around with lots of experience. A 20" mirror at f5.5 will yield a 2794mm focal length. That should yeild 90x with the 31mm I have and 798x with a 3.5mm (maximum useful magnification) eyepiece. I sent off a message to AstroSystems and asked them how much a 20" & 22" mirror and mirror cell would weigh. I think I am liking the 20" the more I think about it. Jim, that sounds like a good point to design around. Long enough F# to avoid most of the off axis aberations, short enough you do not have to climb too high on the ladder. It will still take up a fair amount of room for transportation though. Do you plan on making the mirror yourself, or have Steve build it? I too like the longer focal length scopes, BUT when you go above 16" diameter, you need to lower the F# to keep the scope to a reasonable overall length. Personally, I do not like to climb much over four steps up a ladder to look through the scope. Once I get higher than that, I get nervous when looking through the eyepiece. The BOB or Big Ogden Bucket has a focal length just a bit over 10', and that was a bit too high for me. So I have arbitrarily chosen a focal length about 100 - 110" that I try to design all my scopes under. Granted the smaller scopes will be much shorter, but once I go up in aperture, I shoot for an F# that will keep the focal length below this number. Now once I get my large grinding machine completed, I may do a mirror as large as 36 - 40", at which time I will have to go beyond my 110" limit. But mostly we will be doing mirrors and kits under 24" diameter. Yes I know Brent. He taught me how to grind mirrors, and encouraged me to teach a class. We have now taught about 70 people in the valley how to make their own telescope. We teach the entire process from grinding their own mirror and help them build the rest of the telescope assembly. Our first class had 47 people in it, and we were overwhelmed with the sheer size of the work involved. Some of those people did not complete the class or their scopes, but the majority of that class, about 38-40 people came out of the class with completed scopes. Now we limit our classes to 10-20 people so we can give each person the personal attention they need. Our current class has people building scopes ranging in size between an 8" F6 and a 18" F6 scope being built specifically for double star observing. I hope this information helps. The 41mm Panoptic (which I don't own) would give me about 81x in the 22" (3352 focal length) and hopefully as much field of view as the 22mm does in my 12.5" scope. If that is true, I can live with that. The North American Nebula and the Vail Nebula would be about the only things I have seen so far that would require me to pan around. You are right I am most interested in DSO. I don't know if you know Brent Watson. I took a class from him when I built my 12.5" scope and a lot of his thinking has rubbed off on me. He likes high focal rations. In your comment" "Properly figured, a 22" F4 scope" To me you jumped right to the bottom of the f scale when you mentioned F4. I prefer to consider the longer focal ratios then grudgingly slide down into practicability, which your comments are doing to my thinking and I appreciate that. I tend to like higher contrast and less coma problems all better in longer focal length. You also made me think - I am sixty now, how long can I carry a 22" mirror mounted in a box around? I know my 12.5" mirror is hefty. The 22" mirror is 2" thick but I don't know how much it weighs. I would probably be better off going back to a 20" mirror or maybe even 18". I looked through Lowel Lyon's 20 f4.5 at Wolf Creek last week end and it was very good. I always love looking at stuff through Rich's scope too. So, you are making me think and I thank you for that.
