1982 Chicago TV report on arcade games
Great dated story here. Some neat photos inside Williams and Midway, including some photos of the Williams development gear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JJywbVZvCI

That reporter certainly knows how to sling a jacket over his shoulder.

"The life of a video game is basically 6 months to a year, depending on the popularity of the game." - Ron Crouse, Williams Electronics I am so glad that has turned out to be untrue. Yes, it made all of the period photos of the people at Atari look a whole lot more stylish when I saw the "fashion" of Chicago. I think this is earlier than 1982. They talk about Asteroids "about to come out" for home systems, but I thought Asteroids came out for the 2600 well before Christmas 1981, and I have the 400/800 version here in my office (what, you don't?) and it is dated 1981. With Pac-Man and Defender being hot games, I'm betting mid-1981 at the latest. Ms. Pac came out in '81 and it is not even mentioned here. I liked the attempts to ban the "dangerous" arcade games for those under 18. If you note at 1:17, there is an interesting type of lamp behind the midway marquee. They don't quite look like the standard "painting/aquarium" lamp, they appear to be tapered at the base, though that might just be an effect of the light levels on the vidicon. Do you know of a different type of bulb used by Midway, Jeff? -Chris
