In a shaky economy, who wouldn't like a meal and some cash?
Ok, I'm at my wit's end with my Spy Hunter. I've tried different monitors, I've replaced the power supply, and I've tried swearing a it, but nothing seems to let me get it back to 100% working. I've just about got it done, but I need someone with a more technical touch to go over this with me. Now I'm just getting a few random artifacts on the screen and the sync won't lock in after a power down/up cycle. I can adjust it once it's powered up, but it won't stay put when I turn it back off. Here's what I'm offering to anybody out there if they can come in and troubleshoot this one: -Free meal that night (name it, I'll pick it up or just pay you to grab something on the way out) -A $50 gift card to Chili's (was a gift, but I'm not against re-gifting) -$100 cash Spy Hunter is the lone machine in my collection that gives me fits. If that offer sounds low and anybody out there is confident in their abilities to fix it, name your price and we'll see. A couple of things to try -- - for your monitor problem make sure you've got a solid ground between the monitor chassis and the rest of the game grounds (which usually all terminate on the power block in the bottom). Should be a separate wire (or braid) -- been too long since I was in one of those cabs. If it were me I'd check the grounding throughout the game -- usually there is the braid/wire from monitor, pcb chassis, CP, coindoor, etc all homerunning to a single point on the power block. Undo each one, clean the connection, and reattach. - for your artifacts, well, the above might fix it (if grounding is the problem). The other popular thing that goes wrong with those MCR games is the interboard flex connections. CAREFULLY remove each one and put it back in (that's usually enough if that is the problem).. --Kurt Jeff wrote:

Have you tried another power supply? I'm wondering if you are getting ripple from dried-out capacitors? My WG 7000 (might be a 7200) installed brand-new in Dig Dug in 2000, sat in my basement since then, kept cool, probably a total of 40 hours ontime, has now got dead caps. Grrrr.... -Chris

Isn't this the primary failure mode for all old electronics? It's one of the popular problems -- especially in monitors/power supplies where there is a lot of heat buildup. Of course it was popular just recently on lots of motherboards and other widgets due to counterfeit caps with bad electrolyte (which resulted in the caps popping their tops) --Kurt
