I'm getting a Star Wars up and running. I did the get well kit from Bob and got it up and running but it lasted for a few minutes then the spot killer deflection light came on. Anyone out there have a good Amplifone that I can test the HV and Deflection boards in? I have checked and double checked everything and I'm missing something small. I just wanna narrow it down to one of the boards. K, so I have been going over the wiring diagram, and I think this shouldn't be too tough, but I'd like to get a sanity check before I rip into anything.
To run the game boards, I only need to take the harness that would normally got to connector 4J2 on the PS board and connect it to a switcher supplying +5, -5, +12 and -12 on the correct pins. That should get the game running, right?
And since it's just the +5 on the PS board that is hosed, I can still connect it to the ISO transformer and use it to power the coindoor coils, AC lights, switches, etc from connector 4J3. I'll leave the heatsink unplugged. Will it hurt anything to have a mostly zero load on the PS board? All the logic will feed off the switcher, so even if the PS board smokes it shouldn't hurt anything.
Does this seem about right to you guys?

I'd buy the switcher from www.arcadeshop.com with the PCB that allows you to just mount and plug in the existing connectors (no splicing, no rewiring)...you bypass the old, poorly designed power PCBs alltogether. $39 is well worth it. I bought one from them to replace a blown Galaga PS PCB, works great....

The +5 on my Joust power board went out, the heatsink mounted transistor is fried and from the looks of the burnt connector some serious current
went
through it. I'm going to have to replace the molex or jump the wire someway, I've got huge resistance on it when it's connected now.
The header pins have cold solder joints aplenty, I'm hoping it was just a bad connection that caused the current to jump.
Have I fried anything on the boardset when my +5 went nuts? I'm hoping no, and I guess I'll really know when the PS is back up, but I'm wondering what to expect.

So for a total of $19.62 Joust is running on a reliable PS and has a new battery backup so I can keep my high scores and settings.
It only took about 2 hours and went pretty smooth. The PS Chris S. recommended worked like a charm and only cost $15. It does have a "made in 1996" stamp on it though. Never been used, but still, the things already 9 years old!
I did leave the original PS hooked up to power the coin door switches and lights. So far no trouble, and I left it on for about an hour last night.

By Ra-Elco standards, it's screamin' new!
It was a high-quality PS when built, though. Unlike a lot of the generic "replacement arcade switchers" which were designed to be cheap. I went over the technical documentation and this is a really nice supply. Plus it has OVP cutoff at 5.6V on the 5V line, a lot of the arcade supplies don't.
In a few years, any Ra-Elco have left might be too old to use after cooking in their building. But they are fairly fresh; I think the came out of American Laser when they shut down...that's where Ra-Elco got the decent big caps.
Seriously though you do have to be careful there, in particular when buying capacitors as the Ra-Elco new stock might be older than the ones you're replacing.

Anyone out there got a 25" medium-resolution monitor or WG7xxx med-res chassis they want to sell/trade/give away?
I have the Cursed Monitor Chassis From Hell, and I am sick of working on it.

Ok.
I'm addicted up to my eyeballs. It looks like I will be getting a few more pins from the local op, but whilst in Utah, I noticed the arcade at the university mall is almost *EMPTY*. The machines that were in there were DOGS, but they had a lot. They are all owned by Hustle Inc of SLC. Anyone know of this group, and if they are reducing inventory? ;)

Hustle was the king of the ops here for a long time, and never really was easy to deal with from a collector standpoint. I never succeeded at getting into the warehouse, and from what I heard, it was conversion/overpriced hell once you did get in. I believe the warehouse is now closed and the nicklecades *are the warehouse*, where you can sometimes find fair deals.
