I'm looking for stacking software the doesn't come bundled with camera and telescope control software. I leave my PC at home and just mount my DSLR with a short lense on a minimalist tracking device without any guide telescope. There are some popular packages for the video files that planet photographers use but not for DSO still photography. Any sugestions would be appreciated. DT
Daniel, Registax for video/planetary, DSS for dslr work. Both are free. Registar is by far the best registration software I have found to date, but not free. Registax works great for planetary imaging from video files. Cheers David Rankin On 2/9/2010 4:19 PM, daniel turner wrote:

Daniel, Have you tried Deep Sky Stacker. It is free software and seems to work good. Just Google Deep Sky Stacker and it will come up. DSS is Deep Sky Stacker if you've not heard of it. It is a great free solution for DSO DSLR work. Iris is also a good solution. I usually do my subtraction in iris, then my registration in Registar. For some reason Registar seems to deal with getting the photos aligned better and pumps out images with less noise in them. I used Deep Sky Stacker for about a year, then switched to Iris, and then Registar. Iris and DSS can do everything from subtraction, to stacking. Registar is only for registration and stacking. Here is Iris http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/us/iris/iris.htm Free, and handles 16 bit files, also does raw conversion from CR2 and other DSLR Raw formats. Can be a bit tough to get used to. Here is a tutorial I had found online. Good intro tutorial for Iris http://petersastro.50webs.com/tutorials_preprocessing.html Good tutorial for Iris on removing background gradients http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/iris/tutorial4/doc14_us.htm It really does a lot of neat stuff. As a side note, we discussed the Gimp a while ago as a photoshop replacement. However, Gimp only handles 8 bits per channel, which is a little limiting. I just found out about Cinepaint, also known as Film Gimp. It's an offshoot that handles up to 32 bits per channel. I've only done a couple of tests with it, and it looks promising. http://www.cinepaint.org Don't go to 'download' to download it, go to the 'Sourceforge' link...confusing, I know. 'Download' is for the source code. One think I just noticed though, there's no Windows version. Hmm...I smell a project. (I'm on a Mac currently, but I have a windows development system).
