I observed from about 10 miles south of Evanston, Wyoming along Hwy 150. Skies were dark with a few clouds to the north and west. I noted quite a few very bright meteors between 11:45 pm and 12:15 am, mostly to the south. Many left a long, whitish-orange trail which persisted for a maybe 5 seconds. During this 30 minute period, I seen about 40 meteors. The numbers dropped significantly between 12:15 and 12:45 when I called it a night due to clouds and having to get up early. -----Original Message----- From: Joe Bauman [mailto:bau@desnews.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2002 9:58 AM To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Perseids PS: Dear friends, Anyone interested, please send me a note quickly. We might get a caption in today's paper, using a photo I took this morning -- assuming any of my photos turned out. The deadline is tight. I might get in one or two quotes in the caption. Thank you again, Joe _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy
The photo and caption had to be turned in, but thank you very much for responding. I got one reasonable picture (out of 30 exposures!) that shows a PURPLE meteor. Another view shows the great Andromeda galaxy with a green meteor, but the meteor wasn't long enough or bright enough for us to use that view. Just out of curiosity, did anyone else notice odd colors? The only colrs I remember seeing, as opposed to showing up on film, was a bright yellow for the most intense ones. Best wishes, Joe
My editor has decided that the photo should be in tomorrow's Deseret News, not today's. Probably as a sort of consolation prize, he says I can have a story with it, too. So I am back on track with gathering quotes. Please send me some about the Perseids, particularly if anyone can tell me how long they last. My impression is that some might continue showing up for as long as two weeks -- is this right? Also, any comments from my fellow sufferers from Wolf Creek Campground? Best wishes, Joe
Joe, We had a pretty good show, as you could tell from all the oohs and ahhs, at Wolf Creek (aka: the Land of the Wind Chill Factor) despite the cold. Many of the Perseids traveled directly along the Milky Way making the spectacle even more beautiful. The brightest of the meteors left a smoke train that lasted several minutes as it was blown around by the upper atmosphere. There weren't as many bolides on Monday night as some of the Perseid showers in the past have produced but all in all (as Patrick stated) a very good primer for November's Leonids. And, No!, we will not be going to Wolf Creek in November. Possibly Death Valley though. Regards, Dave Bennett On Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at 11:43 AM, Joe Bauman wrote:

Dave, should I say you're from Sugarhouse? Did I remember that right? -- Also, I'm never sure what will be cut becuase of space reasons, but I like your quotes very much and want to use them in my story. Best, Joe
Dear astro friends, my story about the Perseids is at this location on the web. Thanks for all your help. If it doesn't connect let me know and I'll see if there's a different URL. Sometimes the URL location that we can access from the paper is different from where it's posted to the public on the Internet, I think. -- Joe http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,405024120,00.html
For those still interested in Elizabeth Ridge, I found www.TopoZone.com and put together some maps of getting there on my web site: http://www.xmission.com/~lucyblue/home/eliztoposbig.htm http://www.xmission.com/~lucyblue/home/eliztopossmall.htm =) Cynthia -- http://www.cynthiablue.net http://www.utahdogs.com ICQ: 10306498 AIM: OlivLucyBlue
Hi Cynthia, Nice maps! I see from your website that you had a trip up to Wolf Creek in July. What did you think? Not quite as remote as Elizabeth with with paved road and all but sure a lot less wear and tear on the vehicles, aye? Did you make it to the site that we actually observe from on Duchesne Ridge? Hope you and the dogs are doing well. Regards, Dave Bennett http://homepage.mac.com/dlbennett/ On Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at 03:00 PM, Cynthia Blue wrote:

We kinda got lost, didn't know exactly where Wolf Creek was, I hadn't printed out your map as a backup plan and I should have. =P So we camped somewhere around there. It was very nice. A bit to many 3wheelers, but maybe that was just our spot. =) Cynthia David Bennett wrote:
