HI all. Observing with a white light filter, saw the "black-drop" - a bit subtle, but certainly there. Clean separation from the sun's limb at 12:15:30. Kim

Kim, thanks for the updates. When will the images be on UtahAstro Gallery? - Kurt ____________________________________________________________________________________ Sponsored Link Degrees online in as fast as 1 Yr - MBA, Bachelor's, Master's, Associate Click now to apply http://yahoo.degrees.info
Kurt, I didn't set up to image this time - it was all I could do to get the scope out and sneak a peak every few minutes while still trying to meet a deadline for work. Darn. I just don't get enough time to play these days. Skies are still perfectly clear here, but It's a bit breezy now. I have been showing the transit to some co-workers today. One of them, a Mexican immigrant from a remote Oaxaccan village, absolutely refused to believe me when I told him that the sun was just the same thing as the stars in the night sky, only much, much closer! He was amazed that the little spot that is Mercury is "a little larger than the Moon", diminished by distance. That also gave him a mental image of the vast size of the sun. It was fun to see his eyes widen in astonishment. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Sponsored Link Talk more and pay less. The clouds have arrived, 3:20 pm, North Salt Lake. An excellent transit, the 3/5ths that I saw. Considering the weather forecasts the past few days, I feel fortunate to have seen what I did. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Sponsored Link Degrees online in as fast as 1 Yr - MBA, Bachelor's, Master's, Associate Click now to apply http://yahoo.degrees.info
Man what a great show that was! The clouds were actually a relief I was getting tired of taking so many pictures, but the movie I took of the clouds rolling over the Sun and Mercury was pretty cool. Plus the atmosphere became extremely turbulent after the cluds so there was no sense in continuing. I ended up being able to use the 10" LX-50 SCT with a full aperature filter, great view! Now I have to get to work, I'm late but man was it worth it! The last transit of mercury I was sick as a dog and I barely remember seeing anything, I went to a friends house and he used a 4.5" reflector to project the solar disk onto his dining room ceiling, but we both had the flu so bad it was not an enjoyable experience. Still clear and sunny in North Salt Lake. 2:03 pm. I am using a 20x70mm binocular and Baader filters, on the maple parallelogram. It's set-up in front of an open bay door in my shop, facing south. Mercury is obvious now, as it approaches the mid-point of the transit. It seems larger than the last time, but then I was using a telescope at higher power- this is my first transit with a binocular. Too little magnification to spot the "black drop". That large sunspot looks like it has aurora potential, when it nears the sun's central meridian. --- Kim <kimharch@cut.net> wrote:
