Quite a few prominences visible today, as well as a few sunspot groups. The white-light view is fairly good, using a Baader visual filter. I'm amazed at how, apparently, the water vapor in the air can make some details in H-a less visible. Today is much better than other recent days. The view through "sucker holes" on mostly overcast days is never as good as a day with lower humidity, from my experience. If I had the time, I'd actually research the absorbtion factor of water vapor on the H-a wavelength. Maybe it's something else entirely? Call-out for nerds with lots of free time and the need to know! After a long, hard day at work in a 92-degree shop, I am headed for a bowl of my wife's home-made chicken-noodle soup and a cold beer, and have suddenly lost interest in physics- for now. ;-)

Maybe not. Isn't the effect of a cold liquid on a warm body an example of physics in action? :)
Perhaps, but that alone doesn't necessarily require academic interest. Just hunger and thirst. More of a biology matter, IMO. ;-) On Jul 24, 2012 4:41 PM, "Patrick Wiggins" <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

A really nice prominence is visible right now, as well as many smaller ones, and lots of surface detail.
The sun is totally featureless this afternoon. And it smells like burning sagebrush & cedar. ;-)
There is ash falling in my backyard now, like fine snow. My guess is the Camp Williams fire. Not as bad as the Emigration Canyon fire in the '80's, when I was living in Sugarhouse. That was days of dim, red sunlight at noon and blackened, whole aspen leaves drifting down. But still reminiscent of the old Samuel R. Delany novel "Dhalgren" (sp?). "To wound the autumnal city." Melancholy.
Well, the sun IS kinda hot .... ----- Original Message ----- From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Cc: Sent: Wednesday, August 8, 2012 6:59 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] The Sun The sun is totally featureless this afternoon. Are you using Professor Farnsworth's Smelloscope again? Dan On Aug 8, 2012, at 6:59 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Only $69.99 from Explore Scientific. I'm now looking at expanding my nosepiece collection. ;-) This morning the ash carpeted the driveway. It rose up in a plume as I backed out the Explorer. Wondering how much ash fell on our fellow astronomers living in the Herriman area... On Wed, Aug 8, 2012 at 9:55 PM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

Not much ash here in the Herriman area, just a slight dusting in my neighborhood. With the wind the way it was, it seems that we were too close, so the ash drifted and settled farther away. not much wind, I guess that is why there was a big plume. Some ash on my car but not a lot.
