Views of the Sun today through the Bogdan refractor with the Daystar HA filter were really great. Exquisite detail all around the limb. Lots of prominences. And lots of surface detail including a small sunspot in the middle of what resembled a lunar crater with ejecta rays. Using the scope with the Daystar was such that Bruce and I were thinking it probably would not be good for groups of public but would be ideal for moderate sized groups of folks who know their way around a telescope. So now we're thinking of maybe an occasional Sun gazing outings for SLAS members and guests on weekend afternoons. Any interest in such things? In addition to looking we also tried some photography. Never did get it to work with attaching the camera to the filter but not too bad using the afocal method (maybe better with practice). Also not bad for terrestrial imaging (in effect the refractor is a 3,360mm telephoto lens). Here's a couple of afocal shots of the Sun: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/SUN01.JPG And one of the KSL installation on top of the Oquirrhs: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/KSL01.JPG patrick

Patrick, I don't know the configuration of the Daystar filter, but I have an excellent Lumenera camera that just slips into a 1.25 inch eyepiece holder. It takes exceptional images and does it quickly... at up to 60 frames per second, depending on how much chip you use. I would love to participate in a solar imaging session with you and others if you are interested. Let me know. Hi Tyler, Glad to hear you are interested. I'm still trying to get acceptable results with a DSLR but as with most solar system objects, I'm hearing the best way to go is with something that will take a whole slew of images and then let software pick the best. Sounds like what you've got fits the bill. No need to wait for me to schedule something. Just let me know when you'd like to come out and if the scope is available we'll do it. Cheers, patrick On 09 Apr 2010, at 08:34, Tyler Allred wrote:

What I've been working on is using my high-def hard-drive video camcorder coupled afocally. The camera captures full HD video (approximately 2 megapixel resolution, not too bad) and also allows you to manually grab individual frames for stacking and manipulation. I'd be very interested in sun parties at SPOC, Patrick. Situated as it is, next to water and grassy areas, it is much better suited to solar observation than the usual valley locations. I'd even be interested in Saturday morning sun parties, when the seeing is better. On Fri, Apr 9, 2010 at 5:55 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

Hi Chuck, Shooting HD through the Bogdan sounds very interesting. As I mentioned to Tyler, there's no need to wait for something to be scheduled to experiment with your equipment. Just let me, Bruce or Roger B know when you'd like to come out and we'll set something up. Also, I'll bring up the idea of SLAS member only SPOC Sun parties at tomorrow's SLAS BOD meeting. patrick On 12 Apr 2010, at 09:22, Chuck Hards wrote:

You know, we could make some nice, relatively painless solar animations using the video setup. Prominences change so quickly that if we shot an hour of video, we could compress it down into much shorter clips that clearly show the changing morphology. I'll let you know when I have a free Saturday that also corresponds with clear weather and one of you three being free. Thanks! I brought this up at this evening's SLAS board meeting. The plan is to open the refractor early on public star party evenings to do a bit of Sun viewing. If the lines are not too long we could try a bit of imaging. SLAS may also open the refractor one Saturday afternoon per month for members and guests. For dates and times SLAS members should logon to the SLAS website and check the calendar of events. And for those SLAS members wanting to try some serious solar imaging special solar imaging sessions can also be scheduled. Those need to be scheduled through those who are authorized to use the Daystar filter (I think that's currently Bruce Grim, Roger Butz and me with Dave Bernson and Rodger Fry being added to the list soon). The nice thing about my HD camcorder set-up is that the image is visible in real time on a monitor. I currently have a 7" LCD color monitor that I use for this purpose but am pricing larger ones. It works very well for planetary imaging, as well as lunar and solar- also some of the brighter DSO's, such as M42, when coupled to a large-aperture scope and configured for a low-light target. Great for group viewing. Also, as I mentioned, individual frames can be grabbed and stored for stacking and further processing, without dedicated frame-grab software. We were wondering how the road was. We have not been there for years, and way back then, we had some problems with a really big dip in the road. I think it was where the turn off to the actual Pit 'n pole from the first dirt road was. We are pulling a trailer, and our Subaru does not have real high clearance, so I was wondering if others have noticed what shape the road is in these days Thanks, Jo
Hi Jo, When I went there last month for my disaster, I didn't notice anything funky about the road. But I drive a Jeep and maybe that's why. Anyway, I'll probably go there tonight. If you go too, hope you don't mind my generator noise or computer screen. Joe, out of curiosity, are you using a 4-cycle generator? (Quieter) Also, are you using a larger generator than you need? Have you calculated the total system draw? I have also looked into after-market automotive-style mufflers for generators. They can quiet them down considerably. Most generators come with minimial, barely functional mufflers. We are pulling a trailer, and our Subaru does not have real high clearance, so I was wondering if others have noticed what shape the road is in these days
Thanks, Jo

At Pit n Pole there is still a LARGE dip when you turn the corner to head down to the pole and the pit. To avoid it, just go to the left slowly and you'll have a bump or two but nothing like the big dip. I am probably heading out to observe there until around 1:00a.m. so I'll park away and down so I don't disturb anyone when I leave. Then again, maybe Joe doesn't want me around after what happen last time . . . Current Conditions: Temp: 60 Dew Point 21 Relative Humidity 22% Wind: out of the south at 9 Should be pretty good there tonight if the wind dies down.

It was still and beautiful until Jay left. He took the relatively warmer (i.e., above freezing) weather with. After he left the temp plummeted. The National Weather Service predicted a low of 35, and Jay said the frost point would be about 31. But the air dropped at least as far as 28 degrees and my telescope took on just a little frost. However, it wouldn't melt until dawn, so I called it a night and warmed up in the Jeep. Still, it was a blast, with Jay calling me over to look at galaxies and the Ghost of Jupiter neb through is Dob, and I peered at the departing Orion Neb as well as M65 and M66. It was enjoyable. I have also looked into after-market automotive-style mufflers for generators. They can quiet them down considerably. Most generators come with minimial, barely functional mufflers.

We were wondering how the road was. We have not been there for years, and way back then, we had some problems with a really big dip in the road. I think it was where the turn off to the actual Pit 'n pole from the first dirt road was. We are pulling a trailer, and our Subaru does not have real high clearance, so I was wondering if others have noticed what shape the road is in these days
Thanks, Jo

Dave, I am currently chasing the H400 right now so that was NGC 4036 and 4041 in Ursa Major at the time. Nice pair of small galaxies. I'll have the observation up tonight at my blog at http://jaysastronomyobservingblog.blogspot.com/ along with the digitized version of my field sketches. Dave, There were two, separated so they were not the Antennae. I'm not sure which direction Jay was looking. I have to admit I have some dyslexia and I'm horribly directionally challenged. I thought it was 4042 and another that he said. -- Thanks, Joe

Joe, could the galaxies have been 4038-39 in Corvus...the Antennae?...or where you looking north at 4041 in Urs. Maj.?

Sorry, first time today that I have had to post. Wonderful night for me! No frost, no dew (I guess while I was there). I saw on the NWS Mesonet http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/slc/gmap/ that the temp and dew point came close late in the night.
I had one of the best views of M65 and M66 in Joe's scope. Easily see structure in both and the s whip of an arm. For me my favorite pair was NGC 3169 and NGC 3166 (NGC 3165 is there also, but really faint) and the two make a stunning visual image with the surrounding star field. APOD NGC 3466 and NGC 3469< http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.noao.edu/outreach/aop/obse... That APOD show an astrophoto of these two objects, and I need to apologize to Joe for not calling him over on these two but he seemed busy at the time. I managed 12 objects, all members of the Herschel 400 and I sketched each of them which is an on going project of mine. Conditions were really good and I am so glad I went last night.

Just back from Pit'N'Pole -- Steve's recoating the secondary and my cleaning the corrector plate (both sides) turned out fabulous. Saw clearer than in many years, maybe clearing than ever before. Thanks, Joe PS: MAY CAN'T COME TOO SOON!

Sounds like you got quick turn-around from Steve on your recoat job. Good luck!
Maybe L&O meeting in May? May 1, anybody?

Joe, out of curiosity, are you using a 4-cycle generator? (Quieter) Also, are you using a larger generator than you need? Have you calculated the total system draw?
I have also looked into after-market automotive-style mufflers for generators. They can quiet them down considerably. Most generators come with minimial, barely functional mufflers.

Hi Jo, When I went there last month for my disaster, I didn't notice anything funky about the road. But I drive a Jeep and maybe that's why. Anyway, I'll probably go there tonight. If you go too, hope you don't mind my generator noise or computer screen. Best wishes, Joe

Thanks, Jo
