Has anyone seen a [reliable?] weather forecast for Sunday AM's return of Stardust? I'd hate to make the trek from Sanpete if the weather will be rotten. Also, if weather looks good, are folks planning to rendezvous anywhere? Kim

None of the forecasts I've seen look good. The best I've seen so far has the storm not reaching Wendover until later in the day and pretty cloudy before that. But the media is going to be there in force (including one of the TV networks) so those that show up may find themselves on NBC Nightly News. Patrick p.s. Kim, any word on the carpet?

I use - 1) the NOAA Conus skycover loop in this applet (choose "skycover" instead of "temperature" in the option pull-down): http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/graphical/sectors/conusLoop.php 2) the NOAA 24-hour satellite loop - http://www.weather.gov/sat_tab.php The NOAA graphical forecast for Monday night looks like "maybe" - http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/graphical/sectors/ The current NOAA forecast - http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/total_forecast/index.php?wfo=slc&zone=utz005&fire=ut... - reads - ====================== Area Forecast For: The Great Salt Lake Desert and Mountains Including Wendover & Snowville Issued: January 13, 2006 04:06:49 MST Today: Partly cloudy. Highs around 40. Tonight: Partly cloudy. Lows in the mid 20s. Saturday: Mostly cloudy. Highs in the mid 40s. Saturday night: A chance of rain in the evening...then rain and snow likely after midnight. Cloudy. Accumulations possible. Lows around 30. Northwest winds 10-20 mph. Chance of precipitation 60 percent. Sunday: Breezy. Mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of snow. Highs in the upper 30s. Northwest winds 15-25 mph. Sunday night: Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of snow. Lows in the lower 20s. Northwest winds 10-20 mph. Martin luther king jr day: Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 30s. Monday night: Mostly cloudy. Lows near 20. ====================== The current north track of the major storm front over the "top" of Utah - seen in the NOAA satellite loop is encouraging. The Intellicast Jet Stream forecast map shows the current jet stream holding through Saturday. http://www.intellicast.com/IcastPage/LoadPage.aspx?loc=usa&seg=LocalWeather&... It's a question of whether the jet stream will hold and continue to push the storms north - or break - and let a storm roll through late Saturday night. I'd look at the NOAA skycover and satellite loops and make your own judgment call. Personally, I'm watching the sky and these sites through 8:00 pm Saturday night and then deciding whether to drive. In summary, my guessimate is a fair "maybe" for partly cloudy skies with holes through which the satellite will be visible - and start burning incense to appease the weather gods. -:) - Canopus56(Kurt) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Temporary ClearSkyClock for Wendover, NV http://cleardarksky.com/c/WndvrNVkey.html?1 Note that it appears this CSC uses Pacific time, not the Mountain time that is actually used in Wendover (the switch to Pacific time occurs just west of Wendover).
That being the case it at least looks like it could be promising. Maybe.

BTW, NBC has confirmed they will be there Sunday morning. Tape shot there will (they say) be used on Sunday's NBC Nightly News and on MSNBC. So, in other words, try not to scratch places you should not scratch or pick where you should not pick while the cameras are rolling. <grin> Patrick -- Patrick Wiggins NASA Solar System Ambassador to Utah http://www.trilobyte.net/paw/ paw@trilobyte.net 435.882.1209

If it's socked in a 8pm, I'd prefer to not burn a couple of fossilized, reprocessed dinosaurs in the gas tack just to hear the sonic boom. And for those just wanting to hear a boom, be over in my neighborhood tomorrow between 10:00 am and say, noon. I will be test firing. ;) Quoting Canopus56 <canopus56@yahoo.com>: > --- Patrick Wiggins <paw@trilobyte.net> wrote: >> Canopus56 wrote: >> > P.P.S. - Patrick, I have misplaced the Wendover >> > Reentry Track/SkyMap jpg . . . At 4:00 PM, MDT (23:00 UTC), it is clear in Salt Lake City. Two bands of heavy rain are shown on the NOAA satellite loop approaching from the west: http://www.weather.gov/sat_tab.php - one of which is currenlty over Elko per the 22:30 UTC NOAA Nevada detail satellite map: http://sat.wrh.noaa.gov/satellite/2km/lkn/IR2LKN.GIF - in - http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lkn/ However - 1) There appears to be holes in the bands behind the first storm front. 2) Crudely estimating the rate of travel of the western two storm bands, using the 12 hour loop NOAA satellite loop, it looks like the backside of the two storm bands, or a gap between the storm bands, will reach Wendover by 3:00 am. 3) Elko looks possible for the clearing the backside of the band by 3:00am. At 4:00pm, The possibility of not being clouded-out in Wendover at 3:00am looks better, and depends on the two storm fronts maintaining their current rate of speed, so they clear the landing area. If you are driving to Wendover tonight, be prepared to go through one or two squall lines. Plan to have to reduce your driving speed accordingly. P.S. - I'm no professional weathercaster.
