Much too nice a night tonight to let it go to waste so after finishing my regular projects I got thirty 2 minute images of M-63 and repeated for M-57. No time tonight to process so will do that later. But in the mean time if anyone would care to download and process, you'll find the raw data and master flat and dark here: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/M63.ZIP http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/M57.ZIP Each ZIP file is about 36 MB so I can't leave them on the server very long. So grab them soon or they'll be gone. Carpe noctem! patrick

Agreed. Got up at midnight and did a few hours at Knoll. Picked up about 20 Herschels. First time I ever saw the Veil. Wow. Wow.

I've just glanced at the M63 set so far, and they're nice. Is that a different camera? Thanks. But, to be honest, with the whole process automated it really wasn't a lot of work. In fact while the computer, camera and mount were all happily chatting away I was sitting in a hot tub watching the tube. (Well, ok, I did have to get out long enough to change from M-63 to M-57.) :)
Is that a different camera? Best wishes, Joe
No. Same one. patrick

Hi Don, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. For whatever reason the system still has not sent me your message so I'm actually replying to someone else's message who replied to you. Gremlins? Very nice job on the images. Everyone else does so much better than me at processing my data I'm beginning to think I should just stick with gathering photons and letting the more skilled among us turn them into pictures. And, yes, I did see the dark line in M-63. The seeing must have been pretty good last night to allow that much detail. Thanks again, patrick

Patrick, All I did on the processing was use CCDStack and use their cookbook PDF instruction manual following it step-by-step. CCDStack unfortunately costs $199 but you can download a fully operational version for 30 days without buying it to see if you like it enough to shell out the cash. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Patrick Wiggins Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2010 1:55 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Projects Hi Don, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The Tidal Tail is 300,000 light years long. It is evident that NGC 3628 is interacting gravitationally with the other two galaxies in the Leo triplet, I believe NGC 3628 is about the same size as the Milky Way but that may be adjusted after NASA updated the size of the mass of the Milky Way last year.Tthe structure (the tidal tail) has been drawn out of the galaxy by gravitational tides during brief but violent past interactions with its large neighbors. Usually the tail is not imaged so distinctly, the tidal tail is made up of young bluish star clusters and star-forming regions. I wonder as M31 and the Milky Way begin to interact in time if one or the other will develop a tidal tail? I think the tails are cool things and they usually are a result of galaxy interactions and merging. On Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 4:26 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

The images were taking up too much room on my server so I had to remove them. But not before Tyler had a chance to get to them. He sent me his black and white version and then asked if he could use color data from some of his old images to put color in mine. Find the results at the bottom of this page: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=68&g2_page=4 patrick Considering what Don, Tyler and others have been able to do with my data I think in future I'm going to just post the raw data and let them work their magic. Much too nice a night tonight to let it go to waste so after finishing my regular projects I got thirty 2 minute images of M-63 and repeated for M-57.
No time tonight to process so will do that later. But in the mean time if anyone would care to download and process, you'll find the raw data and master flat and dark here:
http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/M63.ZIP http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/M57.ZIP
Each ZIP file is about 36 MB so I can't leave them on the server very long. So grab them soon or they'll be gone.
Carpe noctem!

Patrick & Tyler, that image of M63 is GORGEOUS. Love it! /R --- On Fri, 4/23/10, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

Thanks Rich, I just think it's weird (in a good way) that he was able to take color data taken on a different day using a completely different optical train and camera and add it to my data. Tyler's given me a few suggestions for improving on the M-63 image. Hopefully it'll clear one night soon and I can give it a try. patrick On 23 Apr 2010, at 13:48 , Richard Tenney wrote:

Patrick, Actually, it is really simple to combine image data taken with different optical systems. I know of many imagers who team up to take image data. Usually the shorter focal-length scope takes the color data, and the longer takes the luminance. The human eye does not see great detail in color information, but gets most of its detail cues from the brightness variations which are captured in the luminance data. I could take a blurry color image and add it to a great luminance frame, and your eye could hardly tell the difference from one made with good color data. Now, with truly excellent color data, your eye can see the difference and the image can really pop!
