Last night the SLAS board set this year's Star-B-Q at SPOC for Saturday, 23 August. Included will be golf in the morning and a swap meet and food in the late afternoon. Observing to start at dusk. One thing that was not scheduled for sure is the much talked about car (and Bruce Grim suggested motorcycle) show since the board was not sure there was interest. Bob Moore said he'd bring his Model T, Ann will see about entering her race car, I've got my old Benz and Chuck Hards has said all along he'd be willing to bring his muscle car. And I think Barney B has offered his Benz. So the question is, would that be enough to qualify as a show? Chuck, Barney, can you commit to 23 August? If there is still interest here I'll put something in News to gage club interest as a whole. Thoughts? patrick p.s. BTW, the guy who's company restored my old Benz still has his 300 roadster for sale. All original and "only" $500k. :) I'm going to see him Tuesday before the SLAS meeting and see if he'd like to drive it out to SPOC for the show.

He also has a telescope. Get him to bring it. -A

Clarification: The RX-8 is most certainly NOT a "muscle car", lol. That term refers to high-horsepower cars, typically with V-8 engines. "Point and shoot" type cars that go fast in a straight line but generally don't handle well in turns. Mine is a "sports car", meaning reasonable power but the emphasis on handling, balance, and "feel". Sometimes called "sportsters" and "roadsters", though some would argue that a roadster must be a 2-seat convertible.

I can commit, provided there is some provision on-site for car clean-up. One tends to collect quite a few bugs on a trip to Stansbury in summertime. Also, bringing the Mazda means that I can only bring a small refractor or my 4.25" f/5 telescope. What about the sci-fi movie? Is my portable DVD player and sound system required?

Yes. You could use the hose I use to water the plants. However, you and I are the only ones to say for sure they'd show a car and I don't think two cars will make a show. I may drive mine over and park it next to the Refractor House but I'm getting the impression there's no real interest in a show.

I'm hoping for Forbidden Planet (my favorite sci-fi flick) or The Day the Earth Stood Still (my runner up). I believe Rodger Fry said he has both on DVD.

I don't think so. IIRC Rodger said he (or maybe it was SLAS) has all of the equipment required. Rodger is on Utah-Astronomy (and is in charge of the Star-B-Q) so hopefully he will reply and confirm. patrick
OK, no car show, no problem, no Mazda. In that instance, if I come, I'll drive the beater instead. On Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 4:46 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

Did Boyd decide not to bring his Sunbeam? This is strange. Last fall we had eight or ten folks interested.
