Just came in from viewing the eclipse. Very low in the west and the smog didn't help. But despite the brightening sky the eclipse still showed a good bit of color. Anyone in SL Valley try to spot it? Rob, how's the view from Maui? patrick
I just came in myself. Not bad at all! I'm going to see if any of my pics came out now. I had camera trouble but hopefully a few are decent.
It was a good view from St George. I had to drive up a hill to get a good view through my Oberwerk 15 X 70 binos. Hands are beginning to thaw now. I saw a couple watching and gave them a view through the binos. Debbie On Sat, Dec 10, 2011 at 7:14 AM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

Saw it into totality from the top of Wasatch Blvd. Not much of an eclipse. the sky was brightening before totality and it was in the smog. Sig On Sat, Dec 10, 2011 at 7:14 AM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

I watched it from the Y in provo. being half way up the mountain helped get over most of the garbage in the valley. I'm glad I got up to see it. Josh On Sat, Dec 10, 2011 at 7:37 AM, Rodger C. Fry <rcfry@comcast.net> wrote:

I haven't had time to learn how to use my new Orion astro-camera, so I used a high-def camcorder in still mode, afocally coupled to a 50mm f/9 refractor. But the camera kept changing my manual focus and gain settings, re-setting itself to auto, so these aren't very good at all. None of my shots of the partial phase came out since the moon was an overexposed white blob. These shots of near totality and into totality are just tad better. At least you can tell it's the moon, lol. My apologies to the "real" astrophotographers on the list. http://s260.photobucket.com/albums/ii24/JethroTull1958/ATM/Lunar%20Eclipse/ Still, I'm glad I observed it visually too. Even the best photos never match the visual view. I got up at 4:30 as usual and watched the entire event. I thought it was cool the way those two dim stars popped into view near the lunar limb as it neared totality. You couldn't see them at all for most of the eclipse.

Two of my daughters and I viewed the eclipse from the top of the Sun crest development which put the moon above nearly all the valley gunk. I am glad they cajoled me into getting up at 5:00 to watch it! I watched the eclipse from about 0600 until 0720. My observation is that it was a very dark eclipse. There was not a lot of color compared to others I have seen. It seems like the moon moved through a weak orange into dark gray (almost black) pretty quickly. Many other eclipses I have seen have been a much more vibrant orange. The moon had totally disappeared from sight by 0720. I watched from Bountiful Boulevard. We were pretty well above the haze. At the height of the eclipse there were six of us with tripods set up and cameras capturing the visage. I had hoped for different lighting than what I actually experienced. I have some photos, but I am not sure they are really good. Overall, I am happy to have seen this eclipse. It was very different than any I have seen in the past.
I watched it from my friend's house at 4500S and Wasatch Blvd. The view from there was excellent, even with the smog. It was very cold, about 20 degrees, and by the time the moon sunk out of view, all my digits were numb and just about every joint in my body hurt. It was so worth it though. Through my 8" dob I was able to watch as it passed completely out of view. A great night. On Sat, Dec 10, 2011 at 8:05 AM, Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com>wrote:
