Now that you mention it, I do remember the discussion. Thanks, Rodger ------------------------------ On Mon, Apr 1, 2013 3:30 PM MDT Rodger C. Fry wrote:
There have been several comments about this coming weekend being a new moon weekend and our scheduled public star parties. Technically, it is between the third quarter and new moon. The weekend of April 12 and 13 is actually closer to the new moon weekend. I think there is one other case later in the season that has the same situation. When putting the schedule in place, we looked at the options on this and planned these as shown on the SLAS website.

You can check the calendar on line and see if other events are planned for new-moon weekends. I was surprised when I saw it too. -- Joe

Is this for April, only? I'm pretty sure that historically, new-moon weekends were not "public" nights. Has there been a sea-change in SPOC scheduling that I missed?

NO. These are listed as public star parties on our web site.

Isn't the new-moon weekend supposed to be for members, and not published? Or at least one of the two nights? On Apr 1, 2013 2:04 PM, "Joe Bauman" <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

It's too bad the weather forecast is looking very iffy for the weekend. Is there a sign that can be put up informing the public that the event is cancelled if the weather won't allow it? I've heard of people going to SPOC for public star parties even in a downpour. Even if the bad weather caveat is mentioned in the press, a few still show up.
Personally, I use SLAS april star parties for my long term weather forecasts. When I see a SPOC Star Party date, I mark rainy on my calendar.

Chuck, We do have a sign that says Star Party Cancelled due to Weather Conditions. Usually one or more SLAS members do show up and explain to any visitors that just happen to come out Thanks Rodger C.
