Anyone here seen the ad Astronomy magazine emailed out today? It's headlined "DON'T MISS The GREAT COMET OF 2013" and is hawking a "DEFINITIVE GUIDE" to the comet (their choice of upper case, not mine). They're talking about ISON, of course. I'm guessing the folks at Astronomy are not old enough to have learned the lessons of Comet Kohoutek. Ugh! patrick
Hey, on the flip side, if ISON is truly* just like* Kohoutek, does that mean we'll get an amazingly fantastic Great Comet a year later? ;-) On Tue, Sep 3, 2013 at 3:18 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

Ha! Only a fellow old geezer would remember that. But I hate to think how many people felt so burned by Kohoutek that when West came along they didn't bother to look. Sigh... patrick On 03 Sep 2013, at 15:28, Chuck Hards wrote:

If they were around when West was in the sky, and didn't bother to look, it was their loss. Astronomy magazine has NEVER been known for it's substance. The founder's goal was to publish the "world's most beautiful" astronomy magazine. I've never subscribed and only read a handful of unimpressive issues with pretty pictures and lots of ads. S&T is also past it's prime. When the old owners (who also happended to be the writers) sold it to New Age Media, it lost much of it's value. Charlie Federer is weeping from the heavens. I wish some of the newcomers to this hobby could page through S&T issues from 30, 40, 50 years ago. It was a magazine that was found in every observatory and college astronomy department in the world. I miss it, as it once was. I devoured it, cover to cover, from the moment it showed up in my mailbox each month. On Tue, Sep 3, 2013 at 4:13 PM, Daniel Holmes <danielh@holmesonics.com>wrote:

Ah come on guys. If this were called Comet Wiggins-Bauman you both would be down at the newsstands with magic markers adding exclamation points to every issue on the rack. Seriously, no one has cared what's on the cover of Astronomy Magazine for many years now. Anyone who's interested will go straight to Google or Wiki and do some research by cross checking any number of sources and filtering out the hyperbole all by themselves. The editors at Astronomy are not the gatekeepers of information any more. Today is 2013, not 1973. Daniel, the fact that some of us know how to research astronomical events on the Internet doesn't excuse Astronomy for pimping like mad for a comet people aren't going to be impressed with. Certainly they know that big headlines like that, even if false, sell a lot of magazines. Even this is 2013, they're still selling magazines. They're in every Barnes & Noble in the country, I bet, as well as a lot of supermarkets. And what's with the personal attack? Why assume I'd be doing the ridiculous marking up? I would never want my name associated with some big fake promotion. Kind of insulting, out of the blue, to see you defending bad journalism and accusing others of doing it if we could. -- Joe ________________________________ From: daniel turner <outwest112@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, September 27, 2013 11:17 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Augh! Umm, not exactly true. When minor planet 4099 Wiggins was announced I went out of my way to let folks know how faint it was. Heck when my recent "skydive seatbelt incident" video got picked up by TV I spent much of the interview stressing how unscary and inconsequential the event was. Believe me, with an ego as big as mine, should I ever discover something truly big you can be sure I'll let folks know. :) But until something can be shown to be big I prefer to keep things on the down low so as not to "cry wolf" and disappoint folks. patrick
Unless, of course, their crystal ball or time machine proves accurate and the comet really is spectacular. But I'm not holding my breath. patrick On 27 Sep 2013, at 21:08, Joe Bauman wrote:
