My understanding is that one of the major reasons is that the Columbia Accident Review Board added a requirement that any mission other than to ISS - required that a backup shuttle be ready for launch. Still, this is a major letdown. -----Original Message----- From: Patrick Wiggins [mailto:paw@trilobyte.net] Sent: Fri 1/16/2004 10:28 PM To: Utah Astronomy Cc: Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Re: Hubble repair mission cancelled? Deorbit a functioning telescope at least 4 years before its replacement is launched. I guess I don't understand the reasoning. But then they do have to come up with 11 billion dollars somewhere to pay for the return to the Moon and on to Mars. One more note before I go on assignment and have to stop pestering everyone. Here's an enlarged segment of one of the latest batches of microphotos that NASA posted from Spirit. I have trimmed the large photo down to one small area I find interesting. Look at the curving strand that's something like a segmented worm, near the center of the view. Doesn't this look at least as much like a fossil example of Mars life as the strands of whatever it is that NASA found inside the meteorite? Just a thought. Best wishes, Joe
I don't know, Joe but I think you've been visiting Kim's pharmacy... :-) Patrick Joe Bauman wrote:

JPL has lost touch with Spirit, according to a press conference going on now. -- Joe
Further update: The last confirmed beep from Spirit was yesterday morning before 7 a.m., I gather. An orbiter also heard a transmission I think later in the day but it contained no data and was cut short. This morning JPL sent a command to Spirit, telling it to respond with a beep if it got the signal. They THINK they got a response, which would be very good news, but that needs to be confirmed. The possibilities most under discussion are a software glitch or a power failure. -- Joe
Thanks Joe I haven't seen anything an local TV yet. Keep us posted if anything changes. This really disappointing. Joe Patrick gave us an aurora alert last night. They are notorious for interrupting communications. There is a good chance that is all it is. Jim --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool. Try it!

Latest info from JPL: SPIRIT UPDATE: - Jan 22, 2004, 10:35 am PST The Mars Exploration Rover Spirit radioed a beep Thursday morning confirming that it had received a transmission from Earth. Still, it has not returned any data since early Wednesday. Flight-team engineers for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Project are working to diagnose the cause of communications difficulties. -- Joe
