I've received an email from the Iron County tourist bureau saying some company in Colorado has approached them about putting on an "Eclipse Festival". The place says they'd expect 10,000 people to show up. If that's true, it could really get hectic. But then considering how many people I've seen travel to the ends of the Earth (literally) on eclipse expeditions, with southern Utah so easy and cheap to get to maybe 10,000 is not that impossible. (Remember how many thousands went to SPOC for the Mars watches in 2003?) 20 May could be interesting... Just curious but is there any serious interest here from anyone wanting to travel to Iron County next month to check out various sites? patrick

Why don't you and Bruno come to the next L&O meeting? He can redeem the certificate he won at the Solstice Party, and we'd love to see you both!
We'd have to coordinate that with a trip down from Idaho Falls. On Sun, Feb 5, 2012 at 12:57 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

4 seats, yes. 300 horsepower (like your plane does), no. With me in the pilot seat and with full fuel I can carry ~300# of passengers or about 100# per passenger seat. Have you noticed the dearth of 100@ adults lately? :) patrick (who wants a bigger, faster plane) On 05 Feb 2012, at 17:17, Brent Watson wrote:

No one seems to be paying attention when I remind y'all that Bryce Canyon NP will be the place to be for the eclipse. It's "only" an annular eclipse, so unless you absolutely need that perfect, spot-on centered shadow of the Moon against the backdrop of the sun's limb for a photo or because of a misguided sense of symmetry, which you have to use a filter to enjoy anyway, why not come to where the action is? Events in the Park will be a blast that week. And after the eclipse there will still be ranger programs and observing near the visitor center to wrap up the astronomy festival. I'm committed to help in the Park on eclipse day, but some possibilities for great photos exist just west of the Park with the eclipsed sun above the hoodoos. I'm not certain, but I also think that weather prospects are better here. It can be cold afterwards at night, but we're all used to that, anyway. Those going to Kanarraville or elsewhere have my sympathy. Hi Kim, My question is whether the moon will be entirely within the sun's diameter as seen from Bryce, regardless of whether it's off-center. Anyone figure that out? Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you, Joe. As usual I defer to someone who has already taken the time to look into this. Kevin Poe has done so and assured me some time ago that from Bryce we will indeed see the entire Moon within the Sun's radius, just not centered, of course. My best eclipse photos from 1991 are all of people, not of the eclipse itself. There should be good opportunities for all sorts of "interesting" types, in a spectacular setting. Does anyone know yet if there is an official name for mid-eclipse? Not a terrible loss. FWIW, for the 5 total solars I've been to everyone was eager to see 1st contact. Really excited to see 2nd contact. Except for the bar part, this was even true for the Sky and Telescope eclipse tour in Libya. I was one of the last ones to take down my camera and it still wasn't finished. Some of the buses were starting to leave so I decided to stop recording and get on a bus. I think it was about an hour between 1st and 2nd and about the same for 3rd and 4th. I don't see from that page anything that indicates times of specific events (1st contact, 2nd contact, etc.) and I don't know how to use an ephemeris table. The blue lines on the map only indicate the limits of the area wherein maximum eclipse is visible. What are you looking at that shows that 4th contact won't be visible from Utah? Kevin Poe and I were talking about this the other day. Kevin has been using the Photographer's Ephemeris website (http://photoephemeris.com/) for a lot of his calculations. I understood him to say that from here (Bryce) 4th contact occurs when the sun is less than one degree above the horizon. I'll ask Kevin later today if he has specific times/heights above the horizon for each event. BTW, it seems that "maximum eclipse" is the term I've been looking for, but I like "centrality" or "annularity" better. OK, this time it worked. (When I first tried it didn't work for me - that's why I was confused.) At Bryce Point the altitude at 4th contact is one degree. There could be some interesting photo opportunities just prior to 4th contact with the sun immediately above the horizon, and I do mean without the cheesy palm trees. C'mon, give in. Y'all know that you really want to be in Bryce. The date and time given on the NASA eclipse website are UT. Erik, I think you mean the sunset alt/az (again, these are the coordinates given on this website). But you're essentially correct; alt/az coordinates are relative to an idealized horizon with an altitude angle of zero degrees. The higher horizons at Kanarraville and some possible observing choices that others have mentioned might not be acceptable to some. From some proposed observing locations in our area the horizon will be near 0 degrees. I am looking at an App on my iPhone that correlates well with the website, at Bryce it puts sunset at 8:36 pm and max eclipse at 7:33:41. No worries, wherever I go I will stay until the sunsets, but I doubt I will be looking for 4th contact.

Yep, that’s how I remember it. Between Hires and the Trolley Square movie theaters on the east side of 7th east. I don’t remember “The Other Wife’s Place”, but that’s not saying much. Patrick posted simulations of maximum eclipse from various locations some months ago. Patrick, are those images still available? Can you re-post the URL, if possible? Patrick does his homework. Most of us do not. Myself included.

Here 'tis: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/appearance.jpg I'm still torn about where to go. First I was thinking Kanarraville, then Newcastle and then the highway out of Newcastle. But now after reading the piece in the February S&T about potential cloud cover in Utah showing an average of 9% chance of clouds in St. George, 19% in Bryce and 40% in Cedar I'm leaning back towards Kanarraville in hopes the 40% will not strike this year but if it does, it's less than an hour's drive down I-15 to better chances of clear skies in St. George. Granted, St. George is off the centerline but it is within the path of annularity. I figure it's better to be there than stuck somewhere under clouds with no escape route to possibly better weather. patrick

Thanks Brent and Chuck. Actually I had not thought of it in terms of days. I guess I am something of an airhead. To put this a little bit on topic I'll note there's a saying among pilots that astronomers can share. It goes something like "Some people think the sky's the limit. For me it's home." patrick On 07 Feb 2012, at 07:20, Brent Watson wrote:

I do not think you could fit 10,000 within the city limits, unless it is like Stanaslaw, who flew the first Imperial Polish Airways airliner into JFK from Poland. Remember him? Got excited when he saw the runway and how short it was. Asked his copilot for full flaps, instant reversal of the engines upon touchdown, and help with the brakes. After landing, he wiped his forehead of sweat, said to Wladimir (copilot), I have never seen such a short runway (as the jetliner had its nose wheel just inches from the end of the runway). The copilot looked around and exclaimed "but it sure is wide". 73, lh On 2/5/2012 3:11 AM, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

The 10,000 prediction is nonsense. Some dope is extrapolating from what to expect from a total. I will be surprised if there are 1,000. ________________________________ From: Larry Holmes <larry@kijoda.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 7, 2012 10:57 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Eclipse festival I do not think you could fit 10,000 within the city limits, unless it is like Stanaslaw, who flew the first Imperial Polish Airways airliner into JFK from Poland.
