Comet Lovejoy C2007E/2 Position tonight 10-14
Comet Lovejoy should be easy to find tonight. It is midway between eta Dra and theta Dra. A report today on Cloudynights stated it is visible in dark skies with 10x70 binos and in 10" Dobs with no info on brightness. Recent ICQ observations are: COMET C/2007 E2 (Lovejoy) Total-magnitude and coma-diameter estimates (visual unless otherwise noted): 2007 May 11.55, 9.5, 4'.0 (Y. Nagai, Gunma, Japan, 0.32-m reflector); 8.94, 8.3, 8' (J. J. Gonzalez, Leon, Spain, 25x100 binos); 7.57, 9.4, 4'.7 (Y. Nagai, Gunma, Japan, 0.32-m reflector); - Kurt _______________________________________________ Sent via CSolutions - http://www.csolutions.net
Thanks for posting Kurt, I was just opening my observatory when your message arrived. My planned imaging session is now on hold while I get pictures of the comet (I'll post any that are worth looking at). pw On 14 May 2007, at 21:34, Kurt Fisher wrote:

Patrick, before you turn in, could you post a quick note about how it looks, especially how long and how bright? I might want to try and photograph it. Thanks, Joe
Hi Joe, It's bright enough that the coma is registering in exposures as short as 2 seconds. Unfortunately, I'm set up for shooting a cataclysmic variable I've been working for a while now which means I'm shooting at f/11 with a 9x13' field. That's great for CVs but too slow and too small a field for the comet's tail. So even with 180 second exposures and the mount programmed to follow the comet I'm not seeming much of a tail. Assuming you can shoot a faster focal ratio and wider field you'll probably have better luck. BTW, Lovejoy is currently transiting a bit past 2 am MDT. pw On 15 May 2007, at 00:22, Joe Bauman wrote:
