Well, Sky and Telescope wouldn't publish it but my Binopalooza shot finally got a little attention! Anacortes currently has it up on the Astromart site as the photo of the day: http://www.astromart.com/categories.asp Yippee! Dave Bennett I hope this won't eat any time from my 15 minutes...
Way to go, Dave. It is a great shot. Patrick is certain, but who is the other guy? Is it Chuck? Rich --- David L Bennett <dlbennett@mac.com> wrote:

Thanks...yes, it is Patrick on the left and Chuck on the right. I found the actual ad that Herb York puts out each day: http://www.astromart.com/viewad.asp?cid=223043 Now if I could only get Sky and Tel to do their thing. db On Thursday, October 16, 2003, at 06:01 PM, Richard Tenney wrote:

Wow, very nice! When was it taken? I recognized Lakeside even before I read the caption. Congrats,Joe
I have struggled from the beginning to the present with the proper pronunciation of constellation names. I notice that I am not the only one. However; not even Kim Hyatt ( ;-) has insisted on a particular pronunciations that I am aware of. Now, take the pronunciation of Cassiopeia. Is it KASS-ee-oh-PEE-yah or kass-ee-OH-pee-yah or kass-ee-OH-PEE-yah? I googled for some pronunciation guides and found several. Two of which are listed here. Interestingly enough, they don't agree on the pronunciation of Cassiopeia either, as well as many others. http://starfinders.cvnet.net/articles/conpron.htm <http://www.wro.org/constellations/pronoun1.htm> Canes Venatici is another one. If the word is Italian, then you might think it would be pronounced KAY-nes ven-a-TI-chee, or something similar, but the two listed guides agree that it should be KAY-neez vee-NAT-I-see. I applaud you all for being tolerant of one another in this regard. It would be nice to all speak the same language though. Maybe we could ask Kim to come up with a Utawh pronunciation guide. Uuuh, on second thought - that's ok. Jim --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Shopping - with improved product search
You'll never get concensus on this topic, Jim. Play it safe and use the modern equivalents: The Queen The Hunting Dogs The Great Bear The Longshoreman The 3 Wise Guys The Seven Cisterns Kermit the Frog The Wart and so on.... Chuck, is that Bufo Borealis, the Northern Toad? Also, the IAU does have an 'official' pronunciation guide that is in each year's RASC Observer's Guide. They insist on PISS-ees for Pisces so that should tell you a whole bunch. Dave
Kermit the Frog
The Wart
and so on....

Just my un-informed opinion, but I'd say all three are correct. Plus a few more probably. :) Po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to, etc. Might as well introduce myself. I live in Clearfield, been interested in astronomy for as long as I can remember, but only really got into it in '99 when I left the Air Force. Born and raised in Utah, by the way; even took an Astronomy class at Weber back when it was just a state college. In '99 I bought a used 6" MCT, on a Vixen GP mount, and I've been hauling it around the desert with me since then. I recently got an 18mm eyepiece which screws directly onto my Nikon Coolpix digital camera, so now I'm interested in a better OTA. Aperture envy is a good thing, right? I haven't been to any of the local star parties, but I wish I had since I'm buying property in Kanab (a few lots away from Mr. Foote) and I would really have liked to have gone to the gathering there a few weekends ago. <sigh> Rich Allen
