I mentioned this to the OAS, but I forgot to post about this on Utah-Astronomy. I think this is a great deal that might not last much longer. In the Nov/Dec issue of Astronomy Technology Today there is an article about "The Great Atlas of the Sky" (also known as the world's largest printed atlas of the sky). As the article states, "the atlas consists of 296 maps printed on the front and back of 148 pages measuring 17 by 24 inches". Each map covers 15 degrees x 10 degrees, 1.38 inches/degree. It includes 2.4 million stars down to mag. 12. All the reviews I've seen are very positive. It includes a leatherette zip up binder that is 14.5 inches x 19 inches. There is an internal front pocket to hold accessories and a clear plastic sleeve to hold an individual page so you can use it in the field. The atlas weighs in at about 14 pounds. I ordered it from the publisher at www.greatskyatlas.com<http://www.greatskyatlas.com/> for $99 (including shipping) and it took two months to arrive from Poland. It just arrived yesterday and it was well worth the wait. It definitely is a *big* atlas. You can also order it from Agena AstroProducts at http://agenaastro.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Great+Atlas+of+the+Sky for $139 (including shipping). That is probably the way to get it if you want to have any chance of getting it for the Messier Marathon. I think they are trying to close these out because I believe they used to sell for about $260. Clear skies, Dale.
Thanks Dale, good info for someone looking for a hyooge atlas. I bought the Millenium Star Atlas some years ago and will be probably be sticking with it since it cost a fortune (and I like it). I typically scan any pages I may need for my night's observing run, then take printouts in the field. Nowadays I guess I can just upload the scans to the smartphone and take it along. Maybe one day someone will scan the whole atlas.
Thanks Chuck. I'm planning on taking it with me to St. George. So, anyone going there this weekend can check it out if they'd like. Clear skies, Dale. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Chuck Hards Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2013 9:17 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] The Great Atlas has arrived Thanks Dale, good info for someone looking for a hyooge atlas. Wow - antiquated technology at a really good price. I'm tempted, just the same. Maybe they'll become collector's items. Thanks, Dale. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Dale Hooper Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2013 8:29 AM To: Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Subject: [Utah-astronomy] The Great Atlas has arrived I mentioned this to the OAS, but I forgot to post about this on Utah-Astronomy. Notice however, that if you buy it from Amazon - that it is being serviced by: Agena Astro for an additional $20 (i.e. $159 instead of $139). But, I'll bet they would actually give you the $139 price. I would advise buying directly from Agena through their website. Vendors on eBay are subject to seller fees (as well as PayPal seller fees) and raise their prices to help offset it. Buying through eBay and asking for the direct price is essentially asking them to absorb those fees. On Feb 6, 2013 1:40 PM, "Dale Hooper" <Dale.Hooper@sdl.usu.edu> wrote:
