Hi Debbie:
I read the favorable review on cloudynights.com. This would be a good travel scope to take on a plane.
I read it too and it certainly does sound like the scope is a winner, especially at that price. I was hoping someone local had one and would be willing to show it off before I plunked down the cash. BTW, I ordered a set of Orion's "Mag Wheel" focuser knobs...and wondered: If a stripe on your car makes it go faster, will these knobs make my scope "faster"? ;) C. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Chuck, Debbie et. al., I'm planning to purchase one of the Orion ED 80's if all my current ebay/astromart dealings go as planned. I've been impressed so far with the impressions of those who have reviewed the ED on Cloudy Nights: http://www.cloudynights.com/reviews4/orion80.htm http://www.cloudynights.com/reviews4/orion80-2.htm as well a the ratings on Excelsis.com: http://www.excelsis.com/1.0/ entry.php?sectionid=12&entryid=536&PHPSESSID=ba06a62a686684275ad20e320f5 c40ae I'll be sure to let you know if I do end up with one. I would be using it on my Bogen tripod/ 410 geared head as seen in the second Cloudy Nights review until I decide on something else (if needed...Goodrich liked the 410 but Wing Eng did not). Dave, what's the anticipated timing on your purchase? I have always been skeptical of reviews, especially those by folks whose experience is limited to mostly commercial products. That's not to say that a review can't modify my interest level, but a review is really just an opinion, and nothing beats actually looking through the thing for yourself. I would, of course, use it on my "Weightless" mount. C. --- David L Bennett <dlbennett@mac.com> wrote:

A check of the Orion Website shows this refractor backordered until 12/05. C. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Shopping - with improved product search http://shopping.yahoo.com
Wow! December 2005!!! See, they're competing with AstroPhysics already!!! Seriously, I was hoping to make it in time for the 10/23 order but that didn't happen. It would definitely be for the 12/5 order if I can pull it off. Dave Speaking of the reviews...I liked the idea that Wing had to stop down the TV102 to 80mm for comparison. But you're completely right; I'd have to see it for myself to see if it works for me. db On Thursday, October 9, 2003, at 12:20 PM, Chuck Hards wrote:

Noting that they don't charge your card until the item is shipped, I went ahead and placed my order. The shipping charges of $21.95 seem a tad high for a small "spotter" class scope, bringing the grand total to $450.95. My reasoning is that the backorder date will probably keep slipping. This scope is exploding onto the marketplace and I bet it's months to a year before demand slows enough for Orion to establish a stock of them. I don't think Roland Christen is going to worry until they start selling them in a 150mm version. C. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Sorry, that was Dec. 5th, not Dec. '05. I just checked again, and now the backorder date is Nov. 3rd, so things are looking better. Either they got their order expedited, or a bunch of people cancelled! C. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo!
