Nice night tonight. Looking at my observing log for the last ten sessions I see temperatures when I opened the observatory were: -12 -1 -2 -1 -10 -10 -5 -5 -2 -1 But tonight's entry reads a comparatively balmy +3. Heat wave... patrick

I'm i the backyard in shorts and a tee shirt and my sandals on! Just don't ask me to put on a halter top. I don't own one for a good reason and that is an image those who know me don't need. On Sat, Feb 12, 2011 at 9:31 PM, Dale Wilson <dalel2112@yahoo.com> wrote:

Well, I was hoping to report that for the first time this season I was closing the observatory with a positive temperature. And, surprisingly, right after I made my first post it actually went up a degree. But I'm closing now and it's definitely on the minus side (but only barely). I spent last evening grilling steaks on the patio, in the dimming twilight. We looked at constellations and marvelled at the shadows cast by the waxing moon. No optical aid other than our eyes. A nice evening, helped along by a few shots of Red Breast Irish whiskey and beer chasers. For dessert we made smores, toasting the marshmallows over the firepit. I started in a tee shirt but after sundown I had to slip on my S&T sweatshirt. It was almost too heavy for the conditions. A windbreaker would have probably been sufficient. :o)

Yes, quite a bright night, but actually pretty nice and its pretty steady. So far I have nabbed 10 doubles and 6 open clusters. My favorite so far is NGC 2301, nice inverted Y asterism to it with a nice orange star near the center. Mesonet is showing a temp of 40 degrees right now, (not sure I buy that so I am taking my digital thermometer out (I use it to measure the temp of the back of the mirror vs the air temp to see how long it takes to cool and IF they two ever meet (they usually don't). I think it is more around 30. Relative humidity is 40 percent now. Figures we get a great series of nights when the moon is heading toward full now. Oh well, that is what double and OC's are for (and the need to get my observing fix). On Sat, Feb 12, 2011 at 9:21 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:
