Astronomers finding alien life elsewhere in our galaxy, through the distinctive biological signatures of life in the atmospheres of alien worlds orbiting other stars, is a thrilling idea. But what gives me a full-on attack of the heebie-jeebies is the prospect of alien life discovering us. Fortunately, the odds of that are... let's just call them slim. -----Original Message----- From: Utah-Astronomy [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Joe Bauman via Utah-Astronomy Sent: Thursday, July 17, 2014 6:16 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Life elsewhere Just to underline the excellent presentation last night: http://www.businessinsider.com/aliens-wont-look-like-et-2014-7 _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Send messages to the list to Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com The Utah-Astronomy mailing list is not affiliated with any astronomy club. Dan, yes, I often tell people when I'm lecturing or otherwise holding forth on the subject that we are in fact very fortunate to _not_ know the answer to the question of whether or not we are alone in the universe. That said, two possible extreme scenarios of our not being alone don't cause me to lose any sleep: 1) Alien life is out there but they have zero interest in us because we are both primitive and boring, or 2) Alien life is out there but it's basically lichen clinging to the underside of the rocks on an otherwise hellish planet ten thousand light years distant It's the thought of what might exist between these two extremes that gets my juices going. -----Original Message----- From: Utah-Astronomy [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Daniel Holmes Sent: Friday, July 18, 2014 9:40 AM To: Utah-astronomy Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Life elsewhere Didn't Arthur C. I wonder how many times we have been discovered by aliens also not able to transverse the distance. Those we will never know. It would be ones that could, if any, that would concern me. On Jul 18, 2014 7:19 AM, "Seth Jarvis" <SJarvis@slco.org> wrote:
