How are the Perseids going for y'all? I just came in from an observing run lasting from 0316 to 0346 MDT. Clear sky. Dark enough to allow me to see all the primary stars in the Little Dipper so that would put the limiting magnitude at about 5. During the half hour I observed I saw 14 Perseids and one sporadic. Also saw another 5 or 6 "maybes" but they were too faint for me to feel confident enough to count them. As I was climbing down off the room I saw two more Perseids within 30 seconds of one another. Astronomical dark doesn't end until about 0450 so I'll probably have another go between 0430 and 0500. patrick
Craig and I went up to the Gravel Quarry from about 10:30 to 3:30+. It was nice and clear and we also set up our scope and enjoyed a number of great views, even with the moon. In fact, the contrast with our light polluted neighborhood was so stark, even with the moon, we could see the Milky Way. Jupiter had a moon shadow going across it and in the lower band was a large white oval outlined in brown. The Perseids were sporadic and not what we had hoped for, but we were also looking at other objects. We only saw about 30 in all those hours. Oh, and coyotes were howling and yipping off and on throughout the night. It was very nice, but I had to take a day of vacation from work, since by the time we put everything away and went to bed, it was almost 5 a.m. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Patrick Wiggins Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 4:04 AM To: utah astronomy listserve utah astronomy Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Perseids: How was the show?
