My friend went to Great Basin this past weekend, and reports it was a total washout. Clouds and rain the entire weekend, much like here.
Chuck I spoke to Ann House earlier today and she was down there and said that Friday night was spectacular. I don't know about the rest of the weekend. Rodger C. My friend got there Friday afternoon and said it was totally overcast. Maybe it cleared up early Saturday morning? On Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 10:14 AM, Rodger C. Fry <rcfry@comcast.net> wrote:

Hi all, I'm the chair of he Heritage Starfest, which also happened this weekend. This event is located in Wayne County, Utah and is a partnership between Capitol Reef NP and a non-profit called the Entrada Institute. Friday night we had some clouds in the early afternoon, but it cleared nicely for late afternoon solar observing and was clear for stargazing. Saturday we had total cloud cover, so no stargazing, but still a small crowd showed for presentations. I believe this is the event Ann was talking about since she was down there volunteering with us. Great event Kate! 100 people in the camp grounds for the Star Party on Friday - was it? Solar viewing on Saturday before the clouds took over. -A On Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 10:37 AM, Kate Magargal <katemagargal@gmail.com>wrote:

I went to Capitol Reef and it was spectacular there on Friday night. Saturday night was overcast so no viewing, but we had an indoor presentation on backyard astronomy and getting started in the hobby, then a bonfire with local stories and Smores. -A On Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 10:28 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Ah, that explains it. Several hundred miles difference between Great Basin and Capitol Reef. On Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 11:12 AM, Ann House <ann@annhouse.org> wrote:

But apparently the same storm system. I packed for home Sunday morning in the rain. These star festivals take so much planning, but we can't plan the weather. That's the name of the game. I was glad that we had alternative activities Saturday night. -A On Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 11:39 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Don't feel badly, Ann, the entire state was pretty much drenched. It rained at my house from Saturday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. I'm glad you had a good Friday night, at least. Just sucker holes here. On Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 12:26 PM, Ann House <ann@annhouse.org> wrote:

My family and I were there from Thursday to Sunday, Beautiful viewing Thursday night, good crowds visiting the scopes. So many stars I had trouble finding things. Plus those rangers have some talent! But clouds and rain Friday and Saturday. They canceled and moved Fridays events and the key note speaker to Saturday. He gave his talk and showed some of his beautiful work. They showed the new ranger minutes about astronomy in the park. Then the movie The City Dark, the last 10 min of the movie got rained out. My family and I had fun doing other things. The one night of viewing was well worth the weekend in that dark sky. Even my wife, who said she did not ever remember seeing the milky way, now says she will miss seeing so many stars at local star parties. Hi Jamie; Glad to hear that you and your family had a great time at Great Basin! I really like that park and have also enjoyed the star parties there in the past. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend this year. As far as local star parties not displaying so many stars; be aware that there are regularly groups of people who observe from dark sky sites not too far from Salt Lake. Typically a group of us observe at the "Pit-N-Pole" on the weekend prior to new moon, and from a site near Vernon, UT on the weekend nearest new moon. These sites have skies that are nearly as good as you had at Great Basin, and are not far from the Salt Lake valley. So, if you would like to come on out and get some serious observing down without the 3 to 4 hour drive to Great Basin, just watch for announcements here on this list. We usually post where/when we are going. And of course, as Jay has already mentioned, the first Utah Star Party will be held next month at the site near Vernon. Enjoy the excellent dark skies we have which are not too far from home!
