Joe, I see it the same way and wondered the same thing even before reading your post. The ring is not parallel with the belts. I'm also wondering where the top of the planet disappeared to. Siegfried Jachmann Family History Network Comptroller 801-553-8881
Siegfried/Joe, I don't know why the rings don't appear parallel with the belts but I suspect it has something to do with the main rusty red belt and the way it's slightly tapered. Also, if the band were more visible as it wrapped around into the shadowed limb it might give a more symmetric appearance. As for the missing top of Saturn...that's the shadow of the ring cast by the sun from below. I was fooled for a bit thinking the shadow on the rings was coming from the ring on the right on not from the sphere of the planet itself but we know that would be kind of tricky; the ring casting a shadow on itself. Obviously this was done in the same movie studio where they shot the faked Moon landings... :-) Patrick Siegfried Jachmann wrote:

PS: I will need the comments as soon as convenient. -- Thanks again, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Hi all: I am working on a light pollution story. If anyone has a comment on effects of light pollution and what should be done, please send me a note at bau@desnews.com. I am especially interested in any particular examples, like remembering what the skies looked like when you were growing up in the Utah outback, compared with the way they are in SLC. But specific things, like stars or nebulae youl could or could not see with bare eyes ... Thanks for all your help through the years. Best wishes, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Congratulations, President Sig! I was especially pleased to read Patrick's News because I was not able to go to last night's meeting. I wanted to attend specifically to vote for you, but then I found myself taking care of a sale of an antique photo, which could not be put off, and got so absorbed with it I forgot all about the meeting. You're the best, and I am really glad you are the new pres-elect. Way to go -- Joe
PS: This was intended to be a private note that I accidentally sent out to everyone -- apologies. But I want to make it plain I have nothing against Sig's opponent, no feelings of opposition. I just wanted to vote for a man I've known and worked with for a long time, and I sincerely hope I did not cause any hard feelings by congratulating him. We all have our preferences, and unfortunately, my feelings of friendship for Sig got out in the open when I meant them to be read just for him. So I have egg on my face, as usual. --Joe

Warm fuzzies aside, we should remember that the job can be real work. This is also one of those times, unfortunately for the office holder, when sh...er, "stuff", can flow uphill. So my thanks too for him taking on the job again. I'll admit in public to having cast a ballot or two for the man in the past. BTW I haven't received the usual "fee" yet Siegfried. --- ziggy943@xmission.com wrote:
