Crazy - the centerline is about 7 miles from my in-laws home in Salem, Oregon. My brother lives just 1 mile from the centerline near the Menan Buttes west of Rexburg, Idaho. That's where I (and probably thousands of others) will be. I ran a simulation of the full eclipse from that location in Stellarium yesterday and got chills watching it. Bring on 2017! And notice that unlike Sunday's eclipse which was so low in the sky, 2017's will start over a third of the way up the sky and finish nearly 2/3 of the way up. That should make for much less worry about how high one's local horizons are. I'm having fun looking really close at the map to see all of the house in Rexburg the centerline will pass directly over. And I can't help but wonder if, like the people of Kanarraville a few years ago, the people in Rexburg today have no idea what they are in for. Not to mention how much air traffic Rexburg's small airport will be having. :) patrick On 22 May 2012, at 10:02, Jared Smith wrote:

I'm having fun looking really close at the map to see all of the house in Rexburg the centerline will pass directly over. Patrick I have been looking at the NASA MAP and the center line does not go over Rexburg at all. It looks like about 5-8 miles south of the city. What program are you looking at for the map. Seems weird that there should be a difference? Mark Mark Shelton Indian Hill Middle School Tech Ed. Teacher Salt Lake Astronomical Society Board Member (School and Special Star Parties Coordinator)
Hi Mark, This is the map I'm using: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html Are you using a different one? It shows the centerline crossing Bob Frew Rd just west of highway 20. When I googled that address it shows Bob Frew Road being in Rexburg at ZIP code 83440. Cheers, patrick On 22 May 2012, at 20:37, Mark Shelton wrote:

Patrick, I mentioned to many aircraft owners throughout the west that the Beryl Junction airstrip was almost exactly on the center line of the eclipse, and urged them to go. I was the only aircraft there. After I opened my flight plan for the return flight I only heard one other aircraft do the same. It was a 172 leaving Cedar City or South Valley. Now maybe there will be more interest in Rexburg from the corporate jet folks, but I'm netting they'll choose Jackson. It is exactly on center line and the area is much more to the taste of those folks. ________________________________ From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2012 8:10 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] 2017 map And notice that unlike Sunday's eclipse which was so low in the sky, 2017's will start over a third of the way up the sky and finish nearly 2/3 of the way up. I just looked again and Sun Valley - another haven for the corporate jet crowd - is within the path of totality. West Yellowstone is only 30 miles north. I don't think Rexburg will see much GA traffic. Good to hear. Looks like we could just park next the run up area for 35 and watch from the grassy area and then head back south after. But I'm still thinking a total is going to attract more people than the annular. patrick On 22 May 2012, at 21:10, Brent Watson wrote:

I was thinking of the Rexburg area. A friend here at work is headed to Wyoming, since he loves that northwest area as a hiker. August is monsoon season in the west, so I was thinking that staying as windward of the continental divide as possible might be an advantage. Clouds will form passing over the mountains and being on the leeward side might decrease one's chances of clear skies. Of course, the further east you go, the longer the span of totality, so those have to be weighed against each other. My 2 cents.
Wyoming also seems to have some spots on center line. Follows I-80 a fair amount, another situation where you will want to keep options open.
