Re: [Utah-astronomy] Bryce Canyon - Look for gegenschien please
Do you think shots taken with a polarizing filter, at various angles relative to the earth-sun line, might improve contrast, or is it thought that light from the gegenschien is completely unpolarized? What filters did you want used? On 9/5/07, Rob Ratkowski Photography <ratkwski@hawaii.rr.com> wrote:
Gegenschien
Funny you mention that, as it's one of the photo documentation projects on the books for the November Kordylewski Cloud search from Mauna Kea. The K Cloud attempt during the total lunar eclipse had no positive outcome but that may be from my partner operating the camera/drive while I was 1/4mile away on the cliff edge shooting the eclipse. Gary was told where to aim, exposure length, filters to be used and shot in white light only ...... oh well.
Good question polarizers. They might help but I was basing my search on the fact that the K Clouds are lunar dust from surface impacts and reflect more in the red, also more abundant during solar minimum. I wanted Gary to shoot w/ a 12 yellow, 21 orange and 25 red, we talked about even trying long IR but we don't have a filter like that yet. I look at this attempt as trying to photograph smoke in fog. I had planned on shooting from Haleakala BUT Mauna Kea is so much darker, even during the day. we have excessive light from Kihei/Wailea not to mention Wailuku/Kahului and then Pukalani/Makawao in the Upcountry area. All these places have grown and sky darkness has lost 2 magnitudes, Mauna Kea is still protected and somewhat more distant from smaller population centers. It truly is 'Clearly the Best". aloha Rob
