A quick shot of the comet before closing this morning. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/C_2011_L4.2013MAY31.JPG I hope someone here with wide-feild capabilities can try this comet. patrick
Patrick Beautiful photo! Thanks for posting. As I mentioned in my "frustrated" post I looked for PANSTARRS in the dark skies of Montana, where it was quite high in the morning, but no luck. I even tried some long exposure photography with my camera riding piggy back to see if I could pick it up like I used to back in March. What do you estimate the brightness of that central blob to be? I only have a 10"SCT so maybe it's outside my range anyway. Thanks Dion ________________________________ From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: utah astronomy listserve utah astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 31, 2013 5:03 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] PANSTARRS this morning A quick shot of the comet before closing this morning. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/C_2011_L4.2013MAY31.JPG I hope someone here with wide-feild capabilities can try this comet. patrick _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Send messages to the list to Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com The Utah-Astronomy mailing list is not affiliated with any astronomy club. Hi Dion, Thanks. But it's times like this that I wish I could shoot wide field. Now if I could just figure a way to use my Schmidt camera with CCD... :) As for brightness, MPC says it's currently about 10. But remember that's a cometary magnitude so you're going to need a pretty big scope to see it. patrick On 31 May 2013, at 10:21, Dion Davidson wrote:

I have toyed with the idea. But it's so rare that I need something wide field it just wouldn't be worth the investment. It sure is a pretty comet, though. And, for once, it's actually an object better placed for viewing here than in Hawaii. :) patrick Sent from my iPad On May 31, 2013, at 15:05, Rob Ratkowski <ratkwski@gmail.com> wrote:

Patrick I have several scopes and use them like eyepieces to fit the scale of the project. My 80 Fluorite doublet is my wide field scope (also have a ST120) but my favorites are my C9.25 and C14. I also use an Explore Scientific 152mm refractor for all but the brightest objects. What about a decent tele lens for your Nikon?? Here is a wider shot of Panstarrs. 10 minutes of data at 6400 ISO. 8" sct, f6.3 ff/fr, Canon T3i Also shot Markarians Chain and M51. Made a guide scope for my LX90 last week or so and things sort of came together finally. Night and day difference between guide scope and no guide scope. http://www.astrobin.com/users/ratskrad/ http://www.astrobin.com/43771/ On Fri, May 31, 2013 at 7:07 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

Wow, Robert. Very nice. I may take a shot at Panstarrs, tonight. I can only hope my image is half as good. Dave On Jun 1, 2013, at 5:16 PM, Robert Taylor <ratskradmt@gmail.com> wrote:

Nice shots. That is one weird looking comet. Just too bad you can't (I think) enter it in the SLAS photo contest. patrick On 01 Jun 2013, at 17:16, Robert Taylor wrote:

I thought he'd mentioned in a meeting that he'd be ineligible because of his being a judge. But regardless of whether he can enter it or not it's still a very nice picture. patrick
