How to make a telescope - school presentation handout instruction sheets
How to make a telescope - school presentation handout instruction sheets http://members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/astromath/htmatkit/MakeTele... This website distributes handouts for use by astronomy clubs in making presentations to junior high schools, elementary schools and scout clubs regarding basic telescope and hand-magnifier optics. The presentations are built around kits assembled from 2 bags of low-cost miscellaneous lenses offered by Edmund Scientifics Online. From the 2 bags of surplus lenses, typically 4 Keplerian and 7 Galilean hand-held telescopes can be assembled. These "telescopes" are packaged in easy to assemble envelopes containing two lenses each and the handouts described below. The bulk surplus lenses can be purchased from: Edmund Scientific Online. 2006. Bag of Lenses. Product No. 3082272. Count #20 per bag. http://scientificsonline.com/ http://scientificsonline.com/product.asp?pn=3009445 (accessed 5/2006) - Canopus56 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Added to this website - Building a demonstration mailing tube refractor from 2006 materials http://members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/astromath/htmatkit/Handout%... In How to make a telescope - school presentation handout/instruction sheets http://members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/astromath/htmatkit/MakeTele... This instruction sheet is targeted at teachers, scout masters and astronomy clubs who want to do "build a refractor" projects with kids. The refractor optics are based on the "Bag of Surplus Lenses" from Edmund Scientifics. The instructions focuses on detailed instructions and a parts list of easily obtained materials found at Staples Office Supply and ACE Hardware in 2006. The intent is to provide a list of instructions where an educator and parent can be confident of buying parts and working through the entire project in one afternoon. There are three other plans and products on the internet, some of which are superior and less expensive than this option. Pope, Tom and Mosher, Jim. 2006. Building a Galilean Telescope. http://www.pacifier.com/~tpope/Building_A_Galilean_Telescope.htm and http://www.pacifier.com/~tpope/Scope_Details.htm accessed 5/2006 (plans and links to other sites with plans for replicas for building a Galilean telescopes, "under $50" U.S.D. per website) Williams, T. and Williams, J. (Rice Univ. Galileo Project) 1995 and 1996. Galileo Replica Telescope Student Project. (approx. $20 U.S.D. in 1996 per website) http://galileo.rice.edu/ and http://galileo.rice.edu/lib/student_work/astronomy95/telescope_design.html and http://galileo.rice.edu/lib/student_work/astronomy96/mtelescope.html accessed 5/2006 Astronomy Society of the Pacific. 2006. Refractor Kit. In Project Star Kits. ($9 U.S.D.) http://www.starlab.com/psprod.html accessed 5/2006 The Project Star Refractor kit at $50 U.S.D. for bulk purchase of 10 scopes is the lowest cost option. A single Project Star Refractor costs $9 U.S.D. Corrections and comments are always appreciated. - Canopus56 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Dear list members, My family will be in Orlando until July 3 and may be in town when the shuttle launches. While it probably isn't likely that it will liftoff on July 1 as planned, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for viewing the launch. Given that the launch window runs from 7/1-19, and we leave on the 3rd, does it make sense to buy launch viewing a ticket package? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Mike Kwan
When I was in Florida for a launch -- which was delayed so long that I gave up and came back to Utah before the shuttle lifted off -- I was amazed by the crowds that wanted to see it. If it was me with my family, I think I'd buy a ticket and leave the tour organizers to deal with the hassle. But check it out first. Thanks, Joe

Well, as long as Joe isn't there it'll p[robably go early... :)

Depends on how close you want to be. FWIW, SLASer Patricia McWhorter used to live in St. Peterburg, Florida and would watch launches from her yard. Considering St. Pete is on the other side of the state, if launches are visible from there you're sure to see it from anywhere even close to the launch site.
Dear Patrick and Joe, Thanks for the great advice. Hopefully, we'll get lucky and it will launch while we're there.
