Patrick,
I was driving west along Utah 56 yesterday and took these photos. They start just after getting out of the mountains west of Cedar City and end just before Modina. The horizon was accurately measured to less than one finger width held at arm's length in every photo.
I would not recommend going to Modina. It is a good place to visit, but not for very long. Every time I have been there (3 or 4) I am followed or watched closely by those who have a differing viewpoint on monogamy.
By the way, the Escalante Valley Elementary School is at Beryl Junction. Not saying to, but a school star party may be possible.

I've posted two of his pictures here: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/brenthwy56-01.jpg Remember that the centerline follows highway 56 so I'm thinking anywhere along the highway should work, especially now that I see how low the horizon is. Thanks Brent for the report. patrick
Lack of a shoulder looks like the biggest problem.
Sunday School Star Party seems unlikely, but at least that might be the best place to park. Forwarded with permission from Brent Watson:

Thanks for the photos. The other folks traveling with me last Sunday decided we should drive through Bryce instead of scouting that site out. I still plan to go down and get some measurements, but it does look promising! On Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 8:43 AM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:

It has been a while since I posted on this list, but I have been lurking again for a few weeks. There is certainly a bunch of traffic here. Anyway, the reason for this post is that I have some things for sale. I hope this doesn't violate the list rules, but if it does, I'll take the heat. Since I have never been in trouble in the past, it will be a new experience. Here is what I have: 2 ea. 5" f4.5 cemented doublet lenses. Some slight adhesive patterns, but the images look to be good. No cells. These would be a great start for a set of large binoculars - suitable for comet hunting. A 12 mm eyepiece would give 48 X with an exit pupil of 2.6 mm. FOV would be 1.75 degrees with an 80 degree eyepiece. Surplus Shed has a similar lens for $125. I'll sell both for $200 OBO. 1 ea. 13.1" f6 mirror, made and figured by John Dobson. He has signed the mirror. I will include the start of an ultra portable telescope. The scope has been designed to go under the seat of an airliner. Most major parts including the secondary are present and accounted for, and I'll tell you how to finish the scope. To eliminate questions, this mirror was made years ago when John visited Salt Lake, and a number of folks helped with the grinding. John did some grinding as well, and he did all of the figuring. I then had him sign the mirror using a diamond stylus. I chipped in an extra amount to retain the mirror myself. I am not familiar with the market these days, but $500 seems like a good starting place. If not, let me know and we can bargain. A box "plus" of mirror grinding supplies including abrasives, Cerium Oxide, a couple of 8" pyrex tools, etc. Make me an offer. I am contemplating selling my 10" f10 planetary reflector with a BK7 optical window and 7/8" secondary, Astro Sital primary. Optical components made by Vaughn Parsons. I designed and built the OTA. It has a cork lined aluminum tube, an aluminum mirror cell with fan, and an aluminum window cell. The finder is an 80 mm. RA finder. This is a great scope for observing the Moon and planets. Comments on its quality include "Mars looks like the cover of S&T." It is a 10" scope, so it does well on the deep sky stuff also. Star images are small pinpoints. It produces refractor-like images. Any interest? Brent
Here is a steal for today. There is also $4.99 shipping, but for $10.00 each it is still a great deal. Today only. http://www.dailysteals.com/

Anyone remember the impromptu tests we did at SPOC a few years ago? Most of the cheapies weren't even visible unless you were dead-on-axis, standing right next to the laser. Not much good in a crowd. In very transparent air with little water vapor or suspended dust, you couldn't see a thing. The 20mW units fared much better.
I've found that if I don't keep my 5mw green laser warm, you can't see the beam much at all. If I keep it up the sleeve of my coat right against my arm between uses, then it works really well. And with that Rodger has invented an improvement to the green laser, here's how it could be marketed: Tired of dropping your green laser while showing the night sky and not being able to find it in the dark? INTRODUCING THE LOCATION BY SMELL DEVICE, simply insert your laser into our handy holster which will hold the device right in your pits. Before long your laser is treated sufficiently to allow you to sniff it out in the dark. All without needing to go white and destroy your dark adaptation! If you order now, you'll get two holsters for the price of one and you can treat yours and a friend's laser both at the same time! Your friend will be delighted you got this to help him out!! To bad Billy Mays is not still with us to tele-market this... The laser I procured and Bruce mounted on the 32" scope at SPOC is rated at 10mW, so for those of you who have used it, you can tell that it's markedly brighter than the "Duck" lasers and similar 5mW units. If memory serves, it actually bench tested at closer to 15mW output. If I stuck my 114mW (bench test) laser in my armpit, I'd have a nice 3rd-degree burn to remind me of the experience. Anyone smell bacon? No, wait. It's liver and onions.
